Teams (work or school) unresponsive after losing focus on Windows 11 machine - Anyone else experiencing this?

Teams is being incredibly frustrating right now.

When I open Teams from being completely shut down, it works as intended. However, if I move focus from Teams for any reason (interacting with another window), Teams is completely unresponsive when I return to it. The Teams window is still active- it comes back from being minimized and I can see activity on the chat I had previously open, but no buttons can be interacted with other than minimize, maximize and close. I can't click on ANYTHING else. No chat, no moving between chats, no nothing. I've also noticed that Teams is sometimes popping up a window when I shut down the application that shows just a blank screen. And when Teams isn't behaving properly, the icon on my menu doesn't show the usual Teams image. It's making me wonder if (somehow) under the hood multiple instances of Teams are getting started, and this behavior is a result of cross-contamination between the two?

I'm using the new Teams (work or school) on Windows 11.

I've already tried restarting Teams, restarting the computer, and uninstalling/reinstalling Teams, to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this behavior, and can point me in the direction of a solution? Right now, my workaround is to completely quit out of Teams and reopen it every time I need to do something with it... horrendous workflow.

This continues to be a problem daily.

Every time a Teams notification comes in (what would normally pop up in the lower righthand portion of my screen), it instead opens in a whole new window and the main Teams window goes unresponsive.

This means that every time a post is made in a chat, I need to restart Teams. Similarly, I need to restart Teams anytime I get a call from someone. The notification bricks my instance, I close out entirely, bring it back up, and then have to call that person back.

I've seen a significant drop in my productivity. I am late to nearly every meeting, and people are noticing. I've explained the situation to a number of them who (thankfully!) are very understanding, but if that were not the case, this would be a complete nightmare.

Please look into this further, because right now I am beholden to a product that is nearly unusable.

Unfortunately, my Teams instance got into that corrupted state again yesterday. While I'm not sure yet, it seemed to happen when I logged into a VPN in order to access a remote machine. Does that ring any bells for known issues?

    Hello Lauren,

    Many thanks for the update.

It could be that your org disabled the usage of classic teams and you can't revert back. Please let me know if the issue arises again.

    Best Regards,

    Ashraf.

    Thank you for the suggestions!

I've cleared the Teams cache and will let you know if the problem recurs.

I don't see a means to revert to Teams classic from the new Teams, though. When this problem started, I downloaded classic and tried to use it, but it wouldn't let me log in with my work account and directed me back to the new version. So I gave up on the idea of using it.

    Hello Lauren,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with Microsoft Teams. May I please know if this persists when you revert to the teams classic version? This will help narrow down if the issue is specific with the new Teams (select the More options button (...) on the top right >toggle off New Teams).

In the meantime, you may clear teams client cache to rule out any corruption within the app launch path.

    1. If Teams is still running, right-click the Teams icon on the taskbar, and then select Quit.
    2. Open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows logo key  +R.
    3. In the Run dialog box, enter the following path, and then select OK.
       %userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams

    4. Delete all files and folders in the directory.
    5. Restart Teams.

You may as well reset the app and check if there is any difference.

    1. Type settings in the search box, and then select the Settings app from the results.
    2. Select Apps > Installed apps, and then type Microsoft Teams in the search box.
    3. Locate the New Microsoft Teams app from the results, select the More options button (...) on the right, and then select Advanced options.
    4. In the Reset section, select Reset.
    5. Restart Teams.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Best Regards,

    Ashraf.
