Cannot access a Team as a guest using invite. Cannot switch to organization without error

I have been invited to join a team as a guest. The team was set up by another company.

I cannot access this team.

I cannot switch to this orgnaiztion in Teams (it is listed).

I cannot leave this organization.

Problem description.

I have a teams email with an invite "You have been added to a team in Microsoft Teams". Click the button to open Teams.

  • Open invite link, launch Teams app. The link opens browser window, prompt for opening Teams but I am prompted to open the web app or launch Teams app. I already have Teams Windows app running in background, and this opens a new prompt asking me to pick an account (presenting me a list of MS email accounts, but not including my company account from which I am logged into Teams/invited to this team). I can click button to use another account, enter my account details. the login window closes and retunrns to the Teams prompt - which just stays blank and unresponsive.

How can I access this team?

Troubleshooting.

  • When I open the invite link in a browser, I choose instead to use the web app. This opens https://teams.microsoft.com/, (which I have previously used and am logged in as my main account). I receive error "You don't have access to this org in Teams. Select another org, or contact your admin for more details". If I pick my main account, I am taken to teams home page - but not to this new team.
  • I have tried logging out of Teams web app and trying invite again.
  • I have tried logging out of Teams in app
  • I have tried uninstalling Teams desktop app and re-installing.

Other observations

  • In desktop app, I see the organization inviting me to a team in the profile dropdown. There is a warning icon next to it with hove error "There is an issue with this org. Switch for more info". If I try to switch to the organization "Oops. We have run into issues while switching to the selected account or org"
  • In desktop app, if I open manage account, takes me to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations, The organization who invited me is not listed.
  • In web app, I see the organiation inviting me to a team in the profile dropwbown. There is a "1" symbol next to the organization. If I switch to this org, I get an error "You don't have access to this org in Teams. Select another org, or contact your admin for more details"
  • In web app, manage account, I see the organization listed. I click elipsis, choose leave org button. This takes me to

https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations but the organization is not listed - so I cannot leave the org.

I have asked the organization to try and remove me from the team and send another invite. This made no difference. Same results as above.

Any suggestions?

    Hello RToddRP,

    Good day!

Thank you for providing detailed information about the issue you are experiencing. Based on the troubleshooting steps you have already taken, it seems like there might be an issue with the host organization's guest access settings or with the link itself.

You may need contact the administrator of the host organization to check in Azure admin portal if your account exists as an active guest user in their tenant. If so, they can try to first remove/delete this account permanently from the tenant. They can do this directly in the Microsoft Entra admin center >Identity > Users >All users. Then Select Deleted users >select the check box next to a deleted user, and then select Delete permanently. You can give it a few hours to propagate, and this should remove any identity you previously had in the organization and shouldn't be listed any more.

Once this is done, you can then ask them to send you a fresh invite to the team and try accessing the link through the browser first while logged in with the "invited account" and see whether there is a difference.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Best Regards,

    Ashraf.
