Hello, I'm attempting to make a folder in a public channel's Files tab where members who are given access can upload files but can only view and edit their own files. I do not want users to be able to see other users' uploaded files.

Is this possible?

    Hi HRazz,

Thank you for reaching out to this forum. I'm Utkarsh and as a fellow Microsoft user, I'm here and ready to help you today. I am a user like you, this is a user forum and not Microsoft directly.

I would be more than happy to answer any other questions should you have them.

To make a folder in a public channel's Files tab where members who are given access can upload files but can only view and edit their own files, you can customize the permissions for the folder in SharePoint Here are the steps to follow:

    1. To create a folder in a public channel's Files tab in Microsoft Teams with restricted view/edit permissions, you can follow these steps: a. Open the desired public channel in Microsoft Teams. b. Go to the Files tab within the channel. c. Click on the "New" button and select "Folder" from the dropdown menu. d. Give the folder a name and press Enter to create it.
    2. Setting up restricted view/edit permissions: a. Right-click on the newly created folder and select "Manage access" from the context menu. b. In the "Manage access" pane, click on the "Members" tab. c. By default, all members of the team will have "Can edit" permissions. To restrict members to only view and edit their own files, you need to change the permissions for each member individually. d. Locate the member you want to restrict and click on the dropdown next to their name. e. Select "Can view" from the dropdown menu. This will restrict their access to view-only. f. To allow the member to edit their own files, select "Can edit" from the dropdown menu instead.
    3. Files in Teams group are stored in SharePoint, to edit team member access to the file, it is suggested to edit file access permission via SharePoint:

    a. In Teams, select one team group and the channel, and click files tab.

    b. In files tab, click Open in SharePoint.

    c. Select the file you want to edit and change access permission->click “…”->Details

    d. In right pane, click “Manage access”. e. Set Team members access to “Can view”, and add specific users you’d like to grant access via “Grant Access”.

Thank you for posting this case in Microsoft Community! I am Microsoft user just like you hope you are well.

    I am NOT a Microsoft Agent/Employee.

I hope this is helpful! Best Regards, Utkarsh

I'm really sorry for the inconvenience.

To create a folder in a public channel's Files tab in Microsoft Teams where members can upload files but can only view and edit their own files , you can follow these steps:

    a. Open Microsoft Teams and navigate to the desired public channel. b. Click on the "Files" tab at the top of the channel. c. Click on the "New" button and select "Folder" from the dropdown menu. d. Give the folder a name and click "Create" to create the folder. e. Right-click on the newly created folder and select "Manage access" from the context menu. f. In the "Manage access" pane, click on the "Members" tab. g. By default, all members of the team will have access to the folder. To restrict access to only the owner of each file, you need to change the permissions for each member individually. h. For each member, click on the dropdown menu next to their name and select "Can edit" or "Can view" based on the level of access you want to grant. i. Repeat this step for each member, ensuring that each member has the appropriate access level. Click "Done" to save the changes.

I hope this proves useful to you ! Let me know if you have any questions

Utkarsh, thank you so much for your reply.

I tried what you suggested but it's not doing quite what I wanted. When a select a member to have "Can view" access, they can no longer upload files into that folder. They can only view existing files that members with "Can edit" access have uploaded.

What I need is the following, assuming member 1 and 2 and folder name "Days":

    • Member 1 navigates to the "Days" folder, and uploads a file
    • Member 2 navigates to the "Days" folder, and s/he cannot see member 1's file, but is able to upload her/his own file into that folder.
    • Both members can edit, download, and view their own files that they've uploaded. But they cannot view, edit, or download each other's files.

The way I'm doing this now is to have two folders for each member, giving access to member 1 and member 2 for their respective folders. I'm trying to streamline the process and only have one folder for scalability. We will have dozens of members and expecting an administrator to check dozens of folders instead of just one will lead to wasted man-hours.
