Teams background in new teams

Hi folks,

I have recently deployed the custom teams' backgrounds from endpoint manager and it seems to work perfectly with the old version of teams. However, I have noticed that when I switch to the new version of teams, the custom background images do not appear. I was wondering if anyone knows how to make it work on the new version of teams. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Regards,

Sanjeev

    Hi Sanjeev,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community. My name is Seun and I'm happy to help.

I understand your concerns about your custom Teams backgrounds not working in the new version.

The issue arises because Microsoft uses a different location for background images in the new Teams version. While the old version relied on the "%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds" folder, the new version utilizes "%LocalAppData%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams\Backgrounds\Uploads".

Here's how you can get your custom backgrounds working again:

I pulled the following steps from https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-teams/new-teams-backgrounds-folder/m-p/3961595#M128733

" A) Rename and Resize Images: Images need to be uploaded with a specific format:

A unique file name generated using a GUID (e.g., XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX.jpeg)

A thumbnail version with the same GUID followed by "_thumb" (e.g., XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX_thumb.jpeg) Generate Names and Thumbnails:

You need to rename the thumbnails for your existing background images based on the format explained above.

    B) Upload to Storage and Deploy:

Once renamed, upload the images (including thumbnails) to your preferred storage location (e.g., network share). Update your Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to distribute the new files to the "%LocalAppData%" path mentioned earlier.

This approach ensures your backgrounds comply with the new naming convention and allows for dynamic additions in the future without modifying scripts."

I hope this information helps you successfully deploy your custom backgrounds in the new Teams version.

If you have any further questions or need clarification on specific steps, please don't hesitate to ask.

    Best Regards, Seun

    Hi Suen,

Thanks for your response. I tried this. I can see the images in the new teams location folder. However, I don't see them in the teams calls virtual background.

    The steps I followed are.

    1. Resize the image
    2. Rename the image (i.e, e.g., XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX.jpeg)

I didn't understand this "A thumbnail version with the same GUID followed by "_thumb" (e.g., XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX_thumb.jpeg) Generate Names and Thumbnails".

Do I need to rename the images to the above format i.e. (e.g., XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX_thumb.jpeg) and upload to storage and deploy?

    Thanks

    Sanjeev
