Teams steals focus when using other Office 365 applications

I am having an issue with Teams, where as soon as I have Teams running (even minimized), as soon as I launch Excel, Teams pops into focus. I minimize teams again and continue working with Excel. Then again without doing anything specific, Teams takes focus again. This doesn't stop. Have found that when I think I am typing into excel, I'm actually typing into a Teams chat! Gotten to the point now that I quit Teams just so that I can use excel! Any ideas what is causing this, and how to stop it?

This isn't specific to Excel, and happens when I use Word, Power Point or any other 365 application.

Having the same issue here as of March 20, 2024. Multiple users are reporting that Teams comes into focus or un-minimizes whenever a Microsoft 365 Office application (Word, Excel) is opened. These are installed desktop client applications- not the web versions. This happens with New Teams. Some users have Windows10 and some have Windows11. The devices are a mix of Dell laptops and desktops.

    Things we have tried:

    • Clearing New Teams cache (C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe)
    • Run Windows Update until no more updates available (includes multiple computer restarts)
    • From Settings>Apps & features- Used both the "Repair" and "Reset" features on New Teams
    • Uninstall/reinstall New Teams
    • sfc /scannow

There is no option in New Teams to "Register Teams as the chat app for Office"- so we can't disable this feature.

None of these steps have prevented New Teams from coming into focus or un-minimizing

    Software versions of affected machines:

    Windows10 (22H2 19045.4046)

    Windows11 (22H2 22621.3296)

    New Teams (24046.2809.2757.3796 / client version 49/24020205514)

Agreed - Teams randomly steals focus, and even starts itself when quitted, it seems with the specific aim of stealing focus. Even setting foregroundlockout to a high value fails to resolve the issue. Triggers appear to be starting Excel, editing in Word or emailing via O365 web platform.

One of our users expanded "new" teams to full screen and it stopped stealing focus. Having it full screen doesn't work for me, so I've just switched back to Classic and the problem went away. Definitely a bug in the new version.

It is very annoying, overall Microsoft is going to deploy this new version to everyone the next week ...
