MS Teams always tries to login using an outdated account.

Hi,

I have been using teams (work or school) for over two years now. Yesterday I did apparently did something which messed up teams, as a result it now always tries to login to a company that no longers exists and its authentication is deactivated.

What I saw was that Teams tried to login to an old company, that no longer exists (which fails because pwd no longer valid).
I tried Advanced Sign In options to login to a different company (the one my account is linked to). I also tried specifying the the organisation throug advanced info and It goes through the pwd, authenticater app and then informs that the domain is deactivated.

So far I tried the following:

  • Checked my microsoft teams account (the old company is not listed there, and the correct company and other domains I have access to are shown (that means https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations does show the correct information for the account.
  • )
  • Checked Settings|Account|Work or School account. An old entry was there and has been removed, however it did not solve the issue.
  • Clear the teams cache (%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams)
  • Unistalled teams (the classic version)
  • Installed new teams, it had the same issue, so uninstalled again.
  • Reinstalled classic teams. At a certain point I was able to login to the correct domain and everything worked. But after I have restarted my computer, the old problem is back (logging in to the wrong domain). However, this indicates the issue is not in the account itself, but in the way teams app tries to log in I think.
Also removed all references to the old domain in the system registry. This did not help.
  • Uninstalled/Installed a the classic version a number of times to no avail, same symptons.
  • Installed the new version again, and I now suddenly see 2 accounts:
    • The old account that is not working (I can not log in to thiis account pwd is outdated and I can not change it (no access to email related to it (company gone). I have no clue where this information was obtained from.
    • An account with the correct email address, but no indication of a company (Here validation seems to go through api.spaces.skype.com which I do not know how that happened, afaik this account was never linked to skype, but I might be wrong).

I tried with putting in my email directly (it is an option now on the startup screen after having  with the following message:

The service principal for resource https://api.spaces.skype.com is disabled. This indicates that a subscription within the tenant has lapsed, or that the administator for this tenant has disabled the application, preventing tockends from being issued for it.

However, I would expect it to go to my companies domain.

Current status is that I still can not log in to teams. I tried to use the online version (https://teams.microsoft.com/go) but it does not show anything and just loops endlessly to try to open the page (the page seems to reload automatically each time as I can see in the browser history).

I searched the internet how to remove default logins from teams, but nothing I found solved my issue.

I am hoping somebody knows how to solve the issue.

Wim Veldhuis.

I've spent about 6 hours doing everything described above and nothing worked. Will just use Zoom instead.

    Hi Lucas,

I checked, there are no wrong organizations on my page.

However, my home organization does not have Teams, the organizations I collaborate with do have that. I can login as guest on these organizations, but I cannot login to my home account apparently, and I cannot leave that organization.

So this did not help the issue.

    Hi,

I tried to follow your suggestions, but to no avail. If I look in my account on the web, I do not see any applications (I do not have an office license).
If I try to logon to teams through the webbrowser, it keeps trying to login, but the screen stays empty.

I also tried installing teams on a clean laptop (I had one laying around), but it gives the same results. To me that looks like the issue is not on my laptop, but somewhere where our account is administrated.

I have asked our admin, but he could not find something.

When I log in I get error code CAA2000B, an internet search reveals that means :
The subscription within the tenant has lapsed, or that the administrator for this tenant has disabled the application, preventing tokens from being issued for it.

I also have issues logging in onto OneDrive, but I have those already for a longer time. As I do not use OneDrive this has never bothered me.

Can you give any pointers for our admin so he knows where we are looking at ?

    Hello wim.veldhuis,

    Good day!

Given that you've tried various solutions, including clearing cache, uninstalling/reinstalling Teams, and removing old entries, it seems like the problem might be originating from some persistent settings or configurations.

Here are a few additional steps you might consider:

    Check Credential Manager:

    • Windows Credential Manager stores login information for various applications and services. Sometimes, outdated or incorrect credentials stored here can cause issues with login processes.
    • To check Credential Manager, you can:
      • Press the Windows key and type "Credential Manager" in the search bar.
      • Open Credential Manager from the search results.
      • Look for any credentials related to Microsoft Teams or the old company and remove them.
      • Restart your computer and try logging into Teams again.
      Reset Teams Settings:
      • Resetting Teams settings involves deleting a configuration file that stores your Teams settings.
      • Navigate to the following directory using File Explorer: %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams.
      • Find the file named desktop-config.json and delete it.
      • This action will reset your Teams settings to default.
      • After deleting the file, restart Microsoft Teams and attempt to log in again.
      Perform a Clean Boot:
      • Performing a clean boot allows you to start Windows with only the essential services and startup programs, which can help identify if a third-party application or service is causing conflicts with Teams.
      • Microsoft provides instructions on how to perform a clean boot in Windows. You can follow these instructions here: Perform a Clean Boot in Windows. After performing a clean boot, try logging into Teams again to see if the issue persists.

You have mentioned, https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations does show the correct information for the account. Could you please try log into the the Teams web application from here?
