How can I create a virtual room?

I would like to have a digital representation of a physical team room/office.

We currently have a team room which is a group chat. The problem is: the first one that calls in triggers a call to EVERYONE which is really annoying.

We would like to have a behaviour like this:

  • We create a room with 5 people
  • It shows as empty
  • If I enter the room, it shows other that I'm in
  • When at least on other person joins, I can start video/auto call
  • That call does NOT call everyone
  • Others could join and leave later on

Is this somehow possible with teams or is it on the agenda?

Hey there, my name is Ajibola and I'm excited to help you today!

One possible solution is to use the breakout rooms feature in Teams meetings. Breakout rooms allow you to split your meeting participants into smaller groups for discussions, brainstorming, or learning. You can create up to 50 breakout rooms and assign people to them automatically or manually. You can also join and leave any breakout room as the meeting organizer or presenter. This way, you can have a main meeting room where everyone can join, and then create breakout rooms for different subgroups or topics. You can also send announcements to all breakout rooms, or bring everyone back to the main meeting room when needed.

Another possible solution is to create a team from scratch in Teams and add your group members as team members. A team is a collection of people, conversations, files, and tools that are related to a specific topic or project. You can create different channels within a team for different subtopics or subgroups. Each channel has its chat, files, tabs, and meetings. You can also make channels private if you want to limit access to certain team members

I think a channel is the right solution. I was just using chats all the time, didn't consider a channel. This works exactly the way we want!

Thanks a lot for the reply.
