If someone in a 1:1 Teams chat deleted it, does it delete for the other person too? I can’t find a chat that should be in my Teams and all I can think of is the other person deleted it?

I should still have a 1:1 Teams chat in my history but it has disappeared. Does that mean the other person deleted it? Should I still not have a copy?

    Dear Jane Craig_467,

Good day! Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community. We will be happy to help you.

In Microsoft Teams, if one person deletes a 1:1 chat, it only removes the chat from their own chat list. The other person will still have access to the chat history unless they also delete it. Refer to Delete a chat thread in Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Support.

If you can't find a chat that should be in your Teams history, it could be due to a few reasons:

    • You might have accidentally deleted the chat from your chat list. If this is the case, the chat history is still available to the other person.
    • Your organization might have retention policies in place that automatically delete chat history after a certain period. Check with your IT admin to see if this applies.
    • Try using the search function in Teams to look for specific keywords or the name of the person you were chatting with. Sometimes, chats can be hidden but not deleted.
    • Clear your Teams cache to ensure there are no display issues. On Windows, you can do this by closing Teams, To do this, close Teams, and reset the app by going to Windows Setting and
      1. Select Apps > Installed apps, and then type Microsoft Teams in the search box.
      2. Locate the New Microsoft Teams app from the results, select the More options button (...) on the right, and then select Advanced options.
      3. In the Reset section, select Reset.
      4. Restart Teams.

If none of these steps help, it might be worth reaching out to your IT support team for further assistance. They can help investigate if there's a broader issue affecting your chat history.

I hope this helps, please let me know if you need any further assistance. Please note that our initial response may not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution. Thank you for your help.
