School Data Sync

Hi All,

I have 2 questions about School Data Sync

  1. In previous year, I was using School Data Sync (Classics) to setup the new academic year Teams Classes. Somehow this year, it did not allow to add 'Profile" anymore - I thought the Classic is not paused out until end of 2024.

  1. Anyway, I went to the New School Data Sync and uploaded all required csv templates. All checked and sync run fine! however, no classes have been created. No sure which steps I have missed

Any helps are much appreciated.

Thanks

Ken

You probably need to set up your manage data configuration after defining your data connection. It is like sync profile in the previous SDS version.

    Hello Kenneth,

    * I am a Microsoft user like you, providing solutions to community members; I am NOT a Microsoft employee.

Question 1: You are correct! Based on the information you provided, it seems like you are encountering an issue with School Data Sync (Classic) while setting up Teams Classes for the new academic year. The image you sent confirms that School Data Sync (Classic) is still accessible until the end of 2024.

Here are some reasons why you might not be able to add a profile:

    1. New Version Rollout: Microsoft is currently transitioning users to the new School Data Sync experience. It's possible that the option to add profiles in the Classic version might be restricted as they prepare for the complete switch.
    2. Profile Expiration: Check if your existing School Data Sync (Classic) profile has expired. There's a setting to manage profile expirations within the Admin portal.

Here's what you can do to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Manage Profile Expiration: Log in to the School Data Sync (Classic) Admin portal. Locate the profile you're using for setting up Teams Classes. Check the expiration date and renew it if it has expired.
    2. Contact Microsoft Support: If the profile isn't expired and you're still unable to add one, then it's best to contact Microsoft support (https://support.microsoft.com/contactus/) for further assistance. They can investigate the issue and provide specific guidance based on your situation.

In the meantime, you can also explore the new School Data Sync experience. While it might require some additional configuration, it's the recommended approach for future use. Here's a link to a Microsoft document on transitioning from School Data Sync (Classic) to the new version: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/schooldatasync/transition-from-sds-classic

Question 2: There are two possible reasons for this:

    1. The "Create Teams" option is not selected in your Sync Profile. By default, SDS will only create the Microsoft 365 Groups and not the Class Teams. To create Class Teams, you need to edit your Sync Profile and select the "Create Teams" option. Then do a resync.
    2. This is a new behavior for SDS. Microsoft recently made a change to the provisioning behavior of SDS. Teams are no longer created automatically. Teachers must now create a new team and then use the group to populate it with students.

Here are some resources that you may find helpful:

    Activate Class Teams: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/schooldatasync/teamify-activate

Groups are created by SDS but not teams: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/school-data-sync/groups-are-created-by-sds-but-not-teams/td-p/1278271

    Hope this helps.
