Why Can’t I Pin Contacts Without Chatting First in Teams?

Hello, With the new Teams layout, I am unable to add a person to my favourites or use the old pinning feature unless I have previously chatted with them. This does not make sense to me, as I believe users should be able to pin anyone or add them to favourites regardless of prior chat history. Please consider reviewing this matter. Thank you.

    Hello,

Thank you, Sophie-N, for your response.
I am currently using Teams version 25122.1415.3698.6812.

To clarify, I want to be able to use this feature with people I haven’t chatted with before to better plan my communication with them in the future or to remind myself to talk to them later. This functionality made sense and used to work with older versions of Teams.
    Thank you.

    Dear Mustafapdx,

Thank you very much for reaching out with your question about not being able to pin contacts in Microsoft Teams version 25122.1415.3698.6812 without first initiating a chat. I truly understand how this limitation can be inconvenient, and I appreciate the opportunity to explain the current situation in detail.

In the latest version of Teams, the Contacts feature has been redesigned and is no longer directly accessible from the Chats section as it used to be. This change is part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to improve and streamline contact management by integrating it more closely with other Microsoft 365 services. However, I completely understand that this new approach may feel restrictive, especially if you are accustomed to the previous way of managing and pinning contacts.

At this time, unfortunately, there is no option to pin contacts without first starting a chat with them. I recognize that this may impact your workflow, and I sincerely empathize with your frustration.

If this is a feature that you feel strongly about, I encourage you to share your feedback or submit a feature request through the Microsoft Feedback Portal. Microsoft values user input highly, and many improvements have been made based on community suggestions. Your voice can help influence future updates and enhancements.

    Dear Mustafapdx,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your feedback regarding the new Teams layout and the pinning feature.

To better assist you, could you please let us know which version of Microsoft Teams you are currently using? This information will help us understand if there are any version-specific behaviors affecting your experience.

Regarding your concern about pinning contacts without prior chat history, currently, Teams requires an existing chat with a contact before you can pin or add them to your favorites. However, you can try the following method to pin a contact once you have a chat with them:

    1. Go to your chat list.
    2. Click the three dots (- - - ) next to the conversation with the contact.
    3. Select Move to > Favorites from the menu.

This will pin the conversation for easier access.

We understand your point that being able to pin any contact regardless of chat history would be a useful feature, and we appreciate your suggestion.

I truly hope you understand that the initial steps I suggested may not have completely resolved the issue, as there might still be underlying causes, we haven't uncovered yet. Please know that I’m here with you every step of the way, ready to work together and do everything I can to help troubleshoot and find the best solution.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes or if you need any further assistance. If the solution I suggested doesn't work on your machine, just let me know. I’ll be here to check and provide more options.

If the information above is helpful, kindly mark it as an answer. This will also assist others in the community who may have similar questions complexity.

    Warm regards,
