I teach Teams and want to reset Teams FRESH for every class (app and online version)

I have tried to Reset it by going to Advanced Options but everything is still there.

I want to start all over again so I can show folks how to set everything up.

Any tips?

Thanks in advance.

    Dear TB in DC,

Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad the instructions were helpful!

How to Set Up a Sample Classroom or Team in Microsoft Teams: (Both Window and Mac)

To simulate a clean teaching environment, you can create a new team specifically for each session or course. Here’s how:

    1. Open Microsoft Teams
    2. Click on Teams in the left sidebar
    3. Select Join or create a team (bottom-left corner)
    4. Click Create team
    5. Choose From scratch
    6. Select Private (recommended for classroom use)
    7. Name your team (e.g., “Demo Class – June 14”)
    8. Add members if needed (or skip to keep it empty)

This gives you a fresh space with no prior messages, files, or channels.

Yes, your personal chats, calendar, and other teams/channels will still be visible in the Teams interface while teaching. However:

    • Chats: These are private and won’t be visible to students unless you open them during screen sharing.
    • Calendar: This is tied to your Microsoft 365 account and shows all your scheduled meetings.
    • Other Teams/Channels: These remain listed in your sidebar, but you can hide or reorder them to reduce clutter.

If you want to avoid any distractions or accidental exposure during a demo, consider:

    • Using a separate demo account with no prior activity
    • Creating a new profile on your computer just for teaching
    • Running Teams in a browser incognito window with a clean login

Please let me know if you need help with any of these steps. If you need further assistance don't hesitate to reach out to us. I’m here to ensure your experience with Word remains productive and under your control.

    Best regards,

Thanks so much for the detailed instructions above.

    Very clear.

    How do you

“Set up a sample classroom or team.”?

Will my personal chats/calendars/channels still show while I’m teaching?

    Dear TB in DC,

Thank you for reaching out regarding the need to reset Microsoft Teams. Below are the recommended steps for both Windows and Mac platforms, based on official Microsoft guidance and community best practices.

    For Windows:

    Option 1: Reset via Settings

    1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
    2. Locate Microsoft Teams
    3. Click the three dots (...) > Advanced options
    4. Scroll down and select Reset
    5. Restart Teams

    Option 2: Manually Clear Cache

    1. Quit Teams completely
    2. Open File Explorer and navigate to:
      %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams
    3. Delete contents of the following folders:
      • Application Cache, Blob Storage, Cache, databases, GPUCache, IndexedDB, Local Storage, tmp

    Option 3: Uninstall and Reinstall

    1. Uninstall Teams via Control Panel
    2. Delete:
      %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Teams
      %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams
      %LocalAppData%\SquirrelTemp
    3. Reboot and reinstall Teams from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/download-app

    For Mac:

    1. Option 1: Clear Cache via Finder
      Quit Teams completely
      1. Open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G
      2. Enter:
        ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams
      3. Delete all contents in this folder
      4. Restart Teams
      5. Open Terminal
      6. Run:
        rm -r ~/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/Teams
      7. Restart Teams

Advanced Options for a Fresh Environment

Option 1: Use a Different Microsoft 365 Account or Tenant

If you need a truly clean Teams experience (e.g., for training, testing, or demos), consider using:

    • A different Microsoft 365 account.
    • A separate tenant with no prior Teams activity.

This ensures no inherited chats, channels, or calendar entries.

Option 2: Create a Sample Classroom and Manually Clean Up

If creating a new tenant isn’t feasible:

    • Set up a sample classroom or team.
    • After each session, manually delete:
      • Channels
      • Messages
      • Calendar events

This approach is practical for educators or trainers who need to reuse the same environment repeatedly.

Please note that these steps remove local data and settings, but your Teams membership, chats, and calendar entries are stored in the cloud and will remain intact. If you require a completely fresh environment (e.g., for training or testing), we recommend using a new Microsoft 365 account or tenant.

I hope the information above is helpful to you. Please feel free to reach out to us with any updates.
