The "Teams" tab in Microsoft Teams keeps disappearing when computer is restarted

Hello,

A user is having an issue with their Microsoft Teams application. The "Teams" tab will disappear when the user restarts their computer and re-opens Teams.

I have found a temporary workaround for this issue by going to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced Options > Reset. This will restore the Teams tab temporarily, but the next time the user restarts their computer it will disappear. Another temporary workaround is uninstalling and reinstalling the application. Again, this will temporarily restore the Teams tab.

The Teams tab ALWAYS appears when the user accesses Teams through office.com.

I have tried:

  1. Shutting down Teams completely and reopening.
  2. Close ALL Office applications, have the user sign out of Teams, close Teams, reopen Teams, resign in.
  3. Uninstalling + reinstalling / resetting Teams (temporary fix).

The user is on Teams version 25007.607.3371.8436.

Any ideas? Thanks!

This is by design with the latest release.

You can return 'Teams' button back to sidebar from settings.

Open Settings > Chats and channels then choose Separate to 'Viewing chats and channels' selection

    Dear greenilygarrus,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

I understand how disturbing it is to have the Teams tab disappear every time you restart your computer. It's definitely disruptive to your workflow, and I appreciate you taking the time to troubleshoot this. Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this

First, a few clarifying questions to help me understand the situation better:

    1. Is this happening on a Windows or Mac machine? The steps might be slightly different depending on the operating system.
    2. Is the Teams application installed directly, or is it part of a Microsoft 365 suite? Knowing this helps pinpoint potential installation issues.
    3. When the Teams tab disappears, are all tabs missing (Activity, Chat, Calendar, Calls, Files) or just the specific "Teams" tab? This helps narrow down if it's a general tab issue or specific to the Teams functionality.
    4. If only Teams, May I double confirm that Viewing chats and channels set to Separate? To check this kindly go to three dots (...) near your profile picture > Settings > Chats and channels > then Make sure that Viewing chats and channels set to Separate.
    5. Have you checked if there are any pending Windows/macOS updates? Sometimes, system updates can impact application behavior.
    6. Are there any error messages displayed when Teams starts up, even briefly? Even a quick flash of an error message could provide a clue.
    7. Is the user's Microsoft 365 account managed by an organization (work/school) or is it a personal account? This can be important for understanding if there are any group policies affecting the user's setup. Check with your IT department to ensure there are no policies that might be causing this issue.

I know this is a lot to try, but by systematically going through these steps, we can hopefully identify the root cause. Please let me know the answers to my questions and the results of each step, and we'll continue to work through this together.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Thank you for this info! It looks like a "preview" feature, but everyone is asking where the "Teams" are in Teams.

For completeness, please see this Microsoft support page that describes the new feature, which also includes the comment that the final implementation may still change. Provide some feedback to them on whether you like it or not.

    Hello,

    1. This is happening on a Windows 11 24H2 26100.2894 machine.
    2. The Teams application is installed directly.
    3. When the Teams tab disappears, all other tabs remain (Chat, Calendar etc all remain present).
    4. I can confirm this is set to Separate.
    5. The machine is fully updated.
    6. No error messages are displayed when Teams starts up/
    7. This user's M365 account is managed by an organization. No other user within our organization is experiencing this issue.

I have the same issue. It only reappears if I use the "reset" function in the apps advanced settings. In addition, it will disappear even if I am away from my computer for a couple of hours.
