Hi,

In my TEAM's group some channels are private and with a lock symbol. I'd like to change that setting to standard/accessible to everyone on the team.

Regards,

Kasup

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

We appreciate your question on how to modify a channel in TEAMS from Private to Standard.

Unfortunately, you cannot convert a standard channel to a private channel or vice versa. If you need to change the channel type, you’ll need to create a new one.

    1. Open Microsoft Teams and navigate to the team where the channel is located.
    2. Click on the team name to access the team settings.
    3. In the team settings, select the “Channels” tab.
    4. Choose “Add channel” to create a new channel or modify an existing one.
    5. Fill in the necessary details for your channel:
      • Name: Provide a descriptive name for the channel.
      • Optional Description: You can add a brief description if needed.
      • Channel Type: Here, you’ll choose to make your channel Standard.
    6. Click Save to create the new standard channel.

Please note the following important points:

    • Standard channels are open to all team members, and anything posted is searchable by others.
    • Private channels are for discussions that shouldn’t be open to all team members. You must be invited to join a private channel to view it within a team.

For more detailed instructions, you can also refer toStandard, private, or shared channels in Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Support.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

If we can't change the 'Type' designation for a Team Channel (which to me is unacceptable, don't you have programmers?) why are we also hamstrung by not being permitted to name the new Team Channel with the same name? Even after the prior one is deleted? I can't even use cap-different same name, I am still denied. VERY user unfriendly. Yet one more reason I find Teams not a user friendly platform.

This makes users' lives miserable, please find a solution for this, changing a channel status should be something available in Teams, members and projects dynamics change easily over time. How can't you change a channel status?

This is not helpful at all, 4 years later and we still can perform a simple modification for the channel type. It's pretty intuitive that we are piloting some project on private before taking it to public. Why this should be an issue to begin with! I will probably look for a solution again for this next year! but I hope somebody will take the very simple action of fixing this unnecessary inconvenience.
