How safe in information stored in Word Online?

My operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit version. I am accessing Outlook.com through the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. I have just discovered that I can write documents with Word Online in Outlook.com, but the documents are stored on Word Online unless I delete them.  How secure is Word Online?  How can I ensure that only I have access to the stored documents on Word Online?

Am I to understand that Microsoft has not built in any measures to prevent people from reading any correspondence I might leave on the Word Online site?

I think it's quite a stretch going from what JMH3143 said to the conclusion you're drawing.  Naturally Microsoft has built in measures to prevent this, but no security measures are 100% secure.  The only way you can reasonably guarantee that no one can access your documents is if you create them on a computer you never connect to a network.

Good question banni1.

Analogy, how long is a piece of string?

Nothing on the Internet is completely secure.

There is no guarantee that only you can "see" your online stored Documents.

Data traversing the Internet is exposed to all kinds of vulnerabilities.

I am using Word Online right now and can see from the url that the connection is 'secure' with 'https'. So I would expect that the stuff I'm typing is encrypted as it travels between my computer and the Microsoft servers. Nobody would be able to read that data in the clear while it travels the wires.

So what I think should be answered here is whether or not the files saved on the Microsoft servers are also encrypted? I.e. if someone manages to break into the servers and finds my files ... would they be human readable? Would they be able to open them in Word and see what I wrote in my Secret Word Online Diary?

    banni1 my friend...

    No offence taken.

It was a delight 'speaking' with you.

Your forthright, polite, articulate manner was particularly appreciated.

    Thank you!

JMH3143,I am sorry if you thought I was getting at you personally. Far from it.  I pointed out how true your comment "Data traversing the Internet is exposed to all kinds of vulnerabilities"  was. I was hoping that my reply would provoke someone at Microsoft to reply to the issues I raised.  So, many apologies if I have upset you.  It was in no way intentional.  Sadly I have no photo of me grovelling, so please accept my word that I am!!!
