How can I convert the private channel to public.

To open the Document channel to all the team members

That's not very user-friendly, guys. You must have full control over the channels you've created + when creating channels there is not enough guidance on what differs between public & private channels, besides who can join them - but there are some functions not working for private groups. Then you decide you'll do a new channel but you can't use the same name... It's supposed to make work easier not harder, just saying. Allow full control over self-created groups.

This is a disappointing feature. Most frustrating is you can't schedule a meeting in private channel .... then what the point of having a channel??? Microsoft Guys please put on your thinking hats for once!

It wasn't immediately obvious that it's not possible to adjust the membership of public channels within a team and now whenever I schedule a meeting in a channel, the whole company gets invited instead of just a smaller subset of people. Had I known this was an issue, I would have create a private channel. I'm sure that I'm not the only one with this problem and thefore being able to switch a channel to private and then remove members would be a godsend.

Without the ability to change a private channel to a public channel, I now cant recreate that same channel name from the private one to a new public one, because even though I delete the private channel, it says that the name is already in use. This not so smart. I really need the channel name for monitoring automation. Now I cant because I cant change the channel from private to public or permanently delete the private channel. The only think then is to change the name of old channel and use the right name for it when creating the new public one. But rather have a easier management on it.

Follow these steps in order to use the same channel name:

Go to Manage Teams, then to Channels, deleted channels will show up at the bottom.

Restore the channel you deleted

Then go to Edit Channel and change the name, I usually just add 'XX" at the end.

Then delete the channelXX

Now you are able to create a new channel with the original name.

TIP: whenever you delete a channel, always change the name first to channelXX. That way, you will always be able to reuse the original name.

No, it’s not feasible. Private channels cannot be converted to public channels and vice versa. See Private channels in Microsoft Teams.

For clarification, is "privacy" different from "private"? I see that in the admin center, for the team, in the settings, there's a radio button that says:

Privacy
[ ] Private
[ ] Public

Is it possible that MS has made it so you can now change it?

Follow up question -- My team has a PUBLIC site, and I see I cannot make it private.

We have 3 types of users/members (owner, member, visitor) -- I noticed that w/in our MEMBERS group was a sub-group called "Everyone except External users' -- are we allowed to 'remove / delete' that group? This sub-group has the same privileges that the specific members w/in the group have, which is 'edit' & we do not want 'everyone' to be able to edit. IF we must keep the sub-group 'everyone ... ' how can i limit them -- or move them to 'visitors'?

Could someone please explain WHY it isn't possible!?!? I've been looking all over for someone to give some kind of explanation as to why such a common sense ability is missing from Teams! It just makes NO sense!!

There are third party apps that can sort of do it. AGAT Software SphereShield can allow you to merge channels. So, it's a two step process...create a new standard channel and then merge the private one into the standard one.

There's no way to "convert" a private channel to public. You can copy the content out to another channel/team, or add additional members as needed.

Hey @Vasil Michev what is the process to copy the content out of a private channel and essentially duplicate the channel but make it public?
