What is the difference between outlook.live.com and outlook.office365.com?

I have spent sometime now trying to figure out why Microsoft would allow so much disparity between outlook.live.com and outlook.office365.com. Anyone?

It's very inconvenient since you can login to both if you have an office account, but get 2 different user experiences. Add-ins and Apps work differently, which is sort of screwy. So I am getting the feeling here that if you have both you should just stick to one or the other?

    Hi Zach,

Thank you for keeping us updated .

Could you please confirm the following:

    1. Are you referring to the Office Web App or the Outlook Web App?
    2. Are you using an Exchange Account or a work email address to login?

Both Outlook.com and outlook.office365.com are Microsoft Web Based Cloud Email Offerings. Office Web App is a service that provides web clients for popular Microsoft Office Desktop products, like Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Like Outlook Web App, it’s available in an on-premises version, complimentary to SharePoint and a cloud version as part of Office 365 for Business.

Outlook Web App used to be called Outlook Web Access is a web client for Exchange Server or Exchange Online. The web client has been improved with each successive version of Exchange and the latest is shipped with both Exchange Server 2013 and Office 365 for Business Exchange Online.

Outlook.com is a free web-based email service from Microsoft. Your Outlook.com address connects you to more than just your inbox. Sign in to Skype, find your contacts and Calendar and work in Office Online.

Please get back to us with the updated status of the issue so that we can work on it to help you better.

Well.. I am not entirely sure what part I did not explain clearly.. However, there are 2 different ways to login to my same Office account. I can login to: outlook.live.com (Outlook.com) and I can login using the same account into: https://outlook.office.com/owa/ (Outlook).

I am not sure why that would matter since it doesn't appear have anything to do with the email system I am using, but rather the URL/instance of email I login to.

    Thanks for your response.

I've just got a Windows 10 laptop. I had been using Vista with Windows Live Mail 2011. In the primary email account I have a lot of old folders that I want to keep in Windows 10. I started a Office 365 Personal trial (although I do have a packaged Office 365 I have not opened). At first, I tried to add the main email account to Outlook, and I keep being told the password and/or user name is incorrect (but it's what I use to log onto Windows 10). So, I added a secondary email (from Mail 2011) with no problem. All the while I'm still trying to add the primary account to Outlook with no avail. Then after I transferred my backup to the new laptop I noticed that on my sidekick notebook that Outlook opened but at the top it says "Outlook.live.com." Thankfully, it shows the primary account with all the old folders (and content) that I had been using in Mail 2011. BUT: since the backup transfer the primary account still only shows the current messages. The old folders were added but they are empty in Mail. Also, in Outlook I can't add the primary account as I keep getting told wrong user name and/or password. Just a few minutes ago I pulled up outlook.live.com on the main Windows 10 laptop and I see my primary account will all the old folders and content. How can I get this all showing the same thing?

In order to help you effectively we need to know exactly what email system you are using.  You can see the differences here

In order to find which version of the email system you are using When you log into the account using a web browser does it say outlook.com, outlook "preview" or Outlook Mail across the top?
