How do I remove 2FA from my account? How do I switch 2FA methods?

Hello,

I currently have 2FA enabled via Google's Authenticator app on my phone. I would like to remove this 2FA method and replace it with something else. However, I cannot seem to figure out how to completely remove a 2FA method from my account. I can disable 2FA, but when I go to enable it again, it remembers that I can use Google's Authenticator app.

So, how can I remove one 2FA method and replace it with another?

Thanks,

Brad

Hello my name is Michael and I am an independent advisor. Let me see if I can lend a hand.

    1. Login to your Microsoft account
    2. Click on Security
    3. Click on more security settings
    4. Under Identity verification app, select setup identity verification app
    5. Click on use a different app
    6. Follow prompts to setup a different app.

I have attached the screenshots below. Let me know if that helps.

I understand I am on the outlook.com forums. I can see how it could be misconstrued that I was talking about my Google account, but I figured it was implied I was asking about my Microsoft/Outlook account, given that I am on the Outlook forums. I am indeed asking about my Microsoft/Outlook account.

My Microsoft/Outlook account has 2FA enabled. 2FA is currently configured to use the Google Authenticator app on my phone for the time-based one-time-pass. When I disable 2FA on my Microsoft account, the page refreshes and I am given the option to set up 2FA. When I attempt to set up 2FA, I am taken through the following process:

    1. Set up two-step verification

This page gives me an overview of what 2FA is, etc etc.

    I click Next.

    1. Set up your smart phone with an app password

"Do you sync your Outlook.com email on any of the following?"

Not applicable, so I click Next.

    1. Some other apps and devices need an app password too

Not applicable, so I click Finish.

Now, I'm taken back to my "Additional security options" page. At no point in the above process am I prompted to reconfigure 2FA. I do not want to use the Google Authenticator app to provide my 2FA codes - I actually want to use 1Password.

So, how do I completely remove my current 2FA method so that I can replace it with something else?

    Hi b.macd,

This is Joyce, an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you.

Please check if you have set up two separate two factor authenticator for your Microsoft account and Google account.

For your Microsoft account, sign in with https://account.microsoft.com/ > go to 'Security' > 'More security options' > And you will see if Two-step verification is turned on or off

For you Google account, you will have to go to https://myaccount.google.com/security and check if 2-Step Verification if turned on.

    Warm regards,

    Joyce

For reference, this is Outlook.com forum. Are you referring to Microsoft authenticator? As per your post, you mentioned Google Authenticator. You may reply on this thread on what exact accounts (Microsoft or Google or both) that you are using, so people in the community can help you out better.
