Hello Community,  This is my first posting. Please suggest how this tyoe of false email can be done by a scammer. Here is what happeened to me on 4/12/21. I do not have a hotmail account, but someone created a hotmail account using my name and somehow sent a first email to my friends  with my usual email asking for help.  These friends were in my contacts list on my PC with Comcast.  The initial email looked like it came from my usual Comcast email. Subsequent emails all said hotmail.com with my name in front. Three of my friends sent $500 thinking they were helping me to send a friend of mine with liver cancer a gift on her birthday. Instructions were to buy a gift card from American Express for $500 and then to just take a picture of it and send me the photo of the Amex gift card.   Has this hapoened to anyone else??  How can we catch this criminal ?  Regards, Karen

Several friends replied to a fraudulent email on 4/12/2021 that said  "Hi, I need a favor. Can you help me?  I forgot my cell phone at home & I am out of town, so just click reply to this note. Thanks. Karen "

My regular email is a comcast.net email.    Three  of my friends fell for the emails that followed which said I had a friend with liver cancer and needed to send her $500 for her birthday today. - Next email told them to go buy an American Express gift card for the $500 and send me back a photo showing the number of the AE card.

Hello Joe,  Thank you for replying.

I feel so bad for those 3 who did just that.  I reported this to the police, FBI and FTC.  I want to tell Microsoft to cancel that bogus hotmail email that was the one hidden behind what appeared to be my comcast.net email,  but it was not.   All emails that replied, to a friend who tried to reply,  were from that fraudulent hotmail. com email .  It said my name with the hotmail.com after my name.

I cannot get ahold of Microsoft to complain.  I do not know how to complain.  I called but was on hold a long time.  Then I decided to join this chatgroup.  I want to tell Microsoft to cancel that bogus hotmail and investigate this case.

    Any suggestions?

    Distressed in Maryland.

    Regards, Karen

I don't know how to catch him, but you said that he / she sent it to YOUR mail. Is it Outlook or Gmail or what?

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: PLEASE DON'T MENTION YOUR EMAIL IN YOUR REPLY. SCAMMERS WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT.
