Hello,

I have a user (my boss) that when he clicks he has read an email it sends multiple read receipts back to the person for that single email(sometimes up to 4 read receipts for the same email).  He is also receiving multiple read/delivered receipts when he sends an email.  Can anyone please help me with this?  Below is more information on our setup.

We are using MS365 via the Outlook Desktop client

OS= Windows 10 Pro

My boss has 4 computers he has Outlook open on all the time (they are all set to use Cache Mode)

He has the email account setup on his iphone

Antivirus= ESet

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

Jaime

    Hello Jaime,

    Thank you for your information. Whether your boss’s account is a Microsoft 365 Business online account. My thought is that at first it’s suggested to:

    1. Temporarily exits all devices, including mobiles, only exempt one most frequently used device, like one Windows PC. This step to shrink potential variables that can impact the follow tests. For this issue can be caused by one, or more than device.
    2. Exit Outlook completely on the PC, disable anti-virus, for from some customer’s reports the anti-virus can cause Outlook running in abnormal behavior.

    Sign in Outlook Web App to test (send emails and receive emails), please be sure there’s no related server Inbox rules before testing. Kindly check if issue occurs to all emails your boss sends and received, or just specific sender or recipient.

    1. Exit web app, open Outlook to test again, please be sure there’s no related client Inbox rules before testing.

    If issue occurs (still receive or send 4 receipts for one email on only one device that is running Outlook) , you can kindly let your boss try to restart Outlook in safe mode to check built-in and Com add-ins, some anti-virus caused issues can also be detected by this way:

    1> Right-click the Windows Startbutton, search and open Runapp. ****

    2> In Run app dialog window, type **Outlook.exe /safe,**and click OK.

    1. Check updates for Outlook desktop client, be sure it’s up to date. And please kindly share one screenshot with Microsoft 365 suite product name as well as its full version number, so that I can further test it:

    If any update, welcome back and do not hesitate to contact me.

    Best Regards,

    Anna

    Hello Jaime,

    Thank you for your updates.

    Based on my current resource we can’t just determine its meaning literarily by the error code. But from your check result it seems that there’s some sync problem.  We generally let customer check Conflicts folders to determine if there’s a sync issue where we can further let user try to turn off Exchange cached mode or use Send/Receive button to narrow down. Another way is let one impacted user create a new Outlook profile, switch to this profile for test.

    I didn’t hear ESET conflicts with Microsoft 365, but it’s recommended to temporarily disable it for test. For based on my experience, several users have reported that anti-virus can impact Outlook’s operation, like message content replaced by specific characters, can’t send, can’t open, or run lag. And some issues of this kind can be detected by Outlook safe mode.

    Since it has affected multiple devices and users, the main factors for this kind of scope can be network, if convenient, it’s recommended to use a different network for test. Another possibility can be related with online service and user accounts. You can use only Outlook Web App to see issue can be reproduced without any local installed app.

    Best Regards,

    Anna

    Hey Anna!

    Thank you very much for your response.  I have done some testing and have been able to recreate the issue on multiple machines/ users not just my bosses.  I have found the issue to be coming from the conflicts folder.  It looks like Outlook is creating copies of every email sent/ received in the conflicts folder. When I click on a read receipt for an email in our Inbox it is also generating one from the conflicts folder.

    In the Sync logs we have the below errors occurring a lot.  Do you know what these errors mean?

    Table critical stop property: 0x0E12000D

    Not equal (conflict) property: 0x007D001F

    We are using ESET Antivirus with "Email Client Protection".  Have you heard of ESET causing conflicts?

    Thank you again for all your help on this.
