Attachments Being Replaced With smime.p7s digital signature

An Outlook desktop client user received an email that was supposed to contain powerpoint slides, but instead could only see an smime.p7s signature file. Other recipients of the same email successfully viewed the slides, and the affected user was able to view the slides in the web version. Any ideas?

    Hi Eric D Csehoski,

Thanks for posting in our forum. I'm here to help.

As far as l know, generally, If someone receives emails with an SMIME.ps7 attachment in the email, that may means the sender has an Email Signing certificate installed on their computer. Please check whether you have digitally sign individual messages. If so, please remove and re-add the signature and check if it helps.

On the other hand, to check whether to issue is related to add-ins in Outlook, please kindly contact the user to open Outlook in safe mode to see if the problem persists. If not, please open Outlook normally and temporarily disable add-ins one at a time to see which one might have caused the problem.

In addition, to further check if it is related to the current Outlook profile you add your account to, please kindly switch to a new profile and only add the affected account here to see if the problem persists.

Hope it helps. Please feel free to let us know if there are any updates from you. If the issue persists, please provide us the screenshot of the email user received and the intact screenshot of the users’ Outlook version for further analysis. Thanks for your time and cooperation.

    Best Regards

    Nerissa

I have run across the same problem in Outlook for Mac with the "New Outlook" interface. The email only shows the smime.p7s, but if I switch off the "New Outlook" then I can read the email. If I forward the email to myself and then switch on "New Outlook" I can read the email because it does not have the original senders smime key attached to it.
