Add my Microsoft 365 email to Gmail

Hi I am trying to add my Office 365 account to gmail so that I can send or receive emails on gmail with my office 365 email domain.  I have followed the steps to add the account on Gmail app by typing in the username and password.  However, when I get to the "Outgoing server settings" - it kept saying the username or password is incorrect.  I tried to use the same password to login to my office 365 account, and it is successful.

When I opened the gmail app, i did the following:

  1. Type in my outlook 365 email address2) Incoming server settings - Type in my outlook 365 username and password  (It passed through successfully)3) Outgoing server settings - I did the same by typing in my outlook 365 username and password (It said username r password is incorrect)- I got the email domain from godaddy, and since I can login to outlook 365 directly with the username and password, the support staff asked me to check with Google as there is no problem with accessing from microsoft. I tried to post the same question on Google Community Help, some people suggest I check with Microsoft. What further action should I take in this case? Thank you very much!

Hi Diane, Thank you for your reply.

I don't have 2-factor authentication enabled on my office 365 mailbox

    For incoming server settings:

    IMAP server: outlook.office.365.com

    Port: 993

    Security Type: SSL/TLS

    For Outgoing server settings:

SMTPserver: outlook.office.365.com (gmail default) but I also tried smtp.office365.com (as it shows in my setting account)

    Port: 587

    Security Type: STARTTLS

Error message: Username or password is incorrect

    Thank you for your advice!

    Hello gants888

I'm Diane, an Office Apps & Services MVP specializing in Outlook, and I’m happy to help you today.

Do you have 2-factor authentication enabled on your office 365 mailbox?

What are you using for the SMTP server and port?

Is that the full error message?

In the past, you needed get that the server name you account was on to connect but the last time I did it, it worked with the general smtp server.

This worked tonight - type your password in notepad, copy and paste it in the password field (use Ctrl+V to paste).

    Hi Diane,

I tried with the SMTP server name again, but it still said username or password is incorrect. :( So that's why I have no idea how to fix it....

smtp.office365.com (as it shows in my setting account)
    Port: 587
    Security Type: STARTTLS

This should work - its what I have an account that I set up months ago. I'm trying to add a new account to see if something changed, but it's not using the correct servers for POP.

smtp.office365.com (as it shows in my setting account)

    Port: 587

    Security Type: STARTTLS
