How do I move my email hosting from another hosting company to Microsoft 365 Business Standard?

I have my own domain name - let’s call it ACME dot Co dot UK.  My email to and from that domain is hosted by a small UK company.  It’s currently POP. I want to change the host to Microsoft 365 Business Standard and from POP to IMAP, keeping my email address as it currently is, so my clients notice no change. I use Outlook for my emails.

How do I do this?  And if I change from POP to IMAP, what happens to all the emails currently in my Inbox, Sent and Draft folders?  Will the process also give me a webmail site, as I have now, or does the current site stay the same??

Thank you.

    Hi skooldog,

The domain provider is where you purchased your domain from, is it the same same one that host your email?

the procedure depends on that .

    here is why

In both cases you will need to get a Microsoft 365 Business standard subscription first.

then if your domain provider is not the same as your email host, you will just need to add your domain as a custom domain in your subscription and from there you will be able to set your personal email, then proceed with migrating the emails, contacts.....

but if there are the same the procedure will be different.

I will be waiting for your feedback.

    Regards,

    Mac

    Hullo Mac,

    Belated thanks for your reply.

I'm not sure what you mean by "changing my domain provider". By "domain provider" do you mean the company which currently hosts my emails? Because, yes, I do want to move my email hosting from that company to Microsoft 365 Business Standard. I want 365 to host my emails. How do I make that move, please?

    Thank you.

    Hi skooldog,

    Greeing.

Thank you for posting in this community.

I want to understand what you mean, so please correct me if I am wrong.

I am assuming that you are not talking about changing your domain provider.

And so in this case what you need to do is first to remove your domain in the email hosting and add your domain as a custom domain in the Microsoft admin center after getting the Microsoft 365 Business Standard Subscription.

After that you'll be able to configure your email address.

This is how you can convert your account from outlook

First we have to remove the pop account

    • Go to file > account settings> account settings
    • Select the pop account and select remove

    Add a new IMAP account

    • Go to file >Add account
    • On the Add account page, select Manual setup or additional server types and click next
    • Select the account type as pop or IMAP
    • Add the User Information details like name, email address, Server information details like Account Type as IMAP, Incoming mail server, Outgoing mail server, Logon information like User Name, Password. Click on the More Settings option
    • Switch to the Advanced tab and enter values for Incoming Server (IMAP) port number as 993 and Outgoing Server port number as 587. Also, choose the encrypted connection as SSL/TSL for both. Click OK.
    • Click Next or click Test Account Settings. Account testing will be progressed.
    • Wait for the account connection to be established. It would display the successful connection, with the IMAP email account is successfully configured message, once set. Click the Finish option finally.

When you go from POP to IMAP, you have the option to transfer the mail folders.

Note: Before performing this type of procedures, it is always recommended to backup your data.

I hope that this answers your concern. I'll be following up on this thread if you need further instructions.

    Regards,

    Mac
