Why did Microsoft Remove the Save icon from the main ribbon in Outlook? How can I bring it back?

To save an Outlook item and it used to be as simple as pressing the disk icon at the top left of the window. Microsoft took the save button away, forcing you to press the FILE menu and then save. Why would you take such an important action icon away??

How can I the save disk icon back?

Example: There is no way to add notes to a current meeting without sending your own notes to everyone attached to that meeting without pressing "save". Please bring back the save icon!!!

Yes, but "save as" is not the same as "save," and it is only in the ribbon when you are looking at all messages and not in the ribbon when you are replying to a message. Am I missing something? Thanks.

You are not missing something. Microsoft decided they know better what users want to see on their screens and decided to hide stuff by default, despite previous settings. Apparently not irritating their users was low on the priority list. And they just had to change stuff just for change's sake so people didn't start to wonder what their yearly subscription is for.

Anyhow, you can get the save button back with a little work.

    1. Click on the down arrow icon in the bottom right to expand the ribbon options.
    2. Select "Show Quick Access Toolbar"

This will display a completely unnecessary additional bar below the ribbon. To put it back in its correct place, click on the little down arrow Icon to customize the Quick Access Toolbar and select "Show above the Ribbon".

Funny enough... the built in Outlook icon in the top left of the email window sort of looks like a save button. I am certain many people have double clicked this thinking it was the old save button, which of course closes the window instead.

Didn't answer the question. The question was, and I quote, "Why did Microsoft Remove the Save icon from the main ribbon in Outlook?"

Another idiotic default from Microsoft. Now, ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!! Don't tell me how to get the damn button back. Tell me why I have 27 buttons on the main ribbon and 20 of them are used in 1% of sessions? WHY doesn't your ribbon include THE ONES I USE THE MOST!

    ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!!

Very very dissatisfied. This is one of several reasons I hate Microsoft and tell people not to use it if at all possible.

I dare you. I DARE you! Answer the question. Why are the most useful icons hidden while the least useful waste space on the main ribbon? ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!

    Hi Vernon C1,

    Greetings.

Thank you for raising your concern in this community.

This as to do with the new outlook design, some options in the ribbon need to be customized.

Here two of my outlook accounts, in the first one I customized the ribbon for your test and in the second it's in the default settings.

    To customized your ribbon,

    • Go to file > options
    • Customize Ribbon
    • Select save as in the list
    • Click on new group > add
    • ok

You may need to restart outlook and check the changes. if this does not work, please make sure that your are using the latest outlook version.

Please let me know your findings for further assistance.

    Regards,

    Mac

    Mac,

Thank you for your reply. I was able to add the save icon to the Outlook windows that I need it. I still find it odd that the Save "disk" icon is still in the header of all other Office programs. Just a bit silly that I had to do the work to put a feature back that I still cannot find a reason to take away. Not like they needed the space for something else.

    Thank you again!

    Vernon
