How to set up Outlook 365 email to Plusnet IMAP mailbox

I want to set up Outlook 365 email to connect to a Plusnet IMAP mailbox. I currently can't do this.

The problem appears to be that I can't enter a username for the IMAP mailbox. As a result, Outlook can't log in to that mailbox. Plusnet usernames are not the same as the email address, and have a specific form for mailboxes of [accountname]+[mailbox] (e.g. for an email address of "******@rosoft.plus.com", the username is "rosoft+mike")

Here's the steps I've tried so far:

  1. File->Account Settings->New
  2. Enter email address as [mailbox]@[accountname].plus.com. Select Advanced Options->Let me set up my account manually
  3. Select IMAP
    • Enter Plusnet IMAP settings:
    • Incoming mail server: imap.plus.net
    • Port: 993
    • Encryption method: SSL/TLS (I also get the same answers if I select STARTTLS here)
    • Uncheck "require login using SPA"
    • Outgoing mail: relay.plus.net
    • Port: 587
    • Encryption method: SSL/TLS (I also get the same answers if I select STARTTLS here)
    • Uncheck "require login using SPA"
  4. Next dialog asks for password (but not username). The username of a Plusnet mailbox is [accountname]+[mailbox], and there's nowhere to type this username.
  • Outlook says "something went wrong"
    • Choosing the "not [mailbox]@[acconutname].plus.com" option sends me back to step 2
    • Choosing the "change account settings" takes me back to step 3
    • Choosing "troubleshoot" looks up some links that aren't useful

    Hello Dan,

I'm Diane, an Office Apps & Services MVP specializing in Outlook, and I’m happy to help you today.

Did you try adding it from Control panel > Mail (Microsoft Outlook). If Outlook is open, you can also access this dialog from File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles. The old dialog will let you add a different username.

Thanks Diane. The key step was to use File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles from within Outlook, as you say. That allows me to enter logon information which is different from the email address on the account.
