Can ESC key be disabled from closing composition dialog so e-mail is not lost?

Can the escape key be disabled from closing an email during composition? Due to auto complete, I wind up using escape key while composing emails. When escape is pressed, it sometimes asks if you want to discard the email you are writing. Just now, it did not ask the question, just closed the dialog and the email was lost with no copy in "Drafts", "Deleted Items", or "Recover Deleted Items from Server". I had not saved the email at any time. Web searches did not help me find a way to recover my email.

At this point, I just want to turn off escape key from closing the dialog so this doesn't happen again. I am having to rewrite the email again.

This is not what I am looking for help with as it was set to Automatically save items:

I must have hit N <enter> to the question below as I was typing quite quickly, not using the mouse:

The real question is "How do I disable escape from closing an unsaved email as this key is used in the dialog box for other functions?"

This is the only case in Outlook where deleting an item (not keeping draft) causes it to be permanently deleted without going into the deleted folder first, thus allowing for recovery.

Actually, I just noted this test e-mail in Recover Deleted Items.

Whereas my original e-mail was not there, when I first looked, even closed Outlook and re-opened per a suggestion on the web.

Thought it might be there, but this was the re-write of the email moved from Inbox to Online Archive, Status folder.

Still, how do I disable ESC from closing dialog box...

    Hello glenryar,

    Greetings

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand the inconvenience is causing on your side I will give some fixes and workarounds to this.

I am afraid there is no way to recover an unsaved email, when I click on escape key it is giving me a different result from yours for it shows the message is saved a  draft as you can see in the screenshot below:

If the emails are not being saved as drafts as it is your case please follow these steps to make some settings changes  File > Options > Mail. Select “Automatically save items that have not been sent after this many minutes”. The minimum value is 1 minutes.

I hope this information helps if you have further inquiries on this feel free to ask by replying here, I will be happy to continue working with you.

    Kind regards,

    Simbarashe
