Why does Visual Studio seem to affect my Task Bar icons?

I have an issue where some of the icons on my Task Bar will show as the attached, generic icon. I've tried searching for fixes but none of them worked. Some of the icons that turn generic are Visual Studio and Microsoft Dynamics NAV related icons. Some are custom apps.

I started to notice that the icons would return to normal after I performed an update to Visual Studio (2022). The last three times my icons turned to generic icons, I went and performed an update to Visual Studio. Once was to update an extension I don't use but wanted to see if it would help. It did. The next time I reverted the update to the extension. Again, it helped. Today my icons had turned to generic icons but there was an update to Visual Studio so I installed it right away. My icons are back to normal.

Is Visual Studio causing the problem? If not, why is it temporarily fixing the problem?

    Hi TimSmythe-9504,

This could be related to Visual Studio. It certainly seems to coincide anecdotally. I would suggest a fresh installation of VS and possibly running a repair on your windows installation.

I hope this answers your question.
