Hi, as of this morning my outlook 2007 client won’t connect to exchange server. It prompts for an exchange 365 username and password. I don’t have an office 365 account. Later today got an email from Microsoft saying outlook 2007 & 2010 won’t be able to use online from 15 August. Why has it changed today??? Any workaround for short term until I decide on upgrade or not?

The issue in the email should only apply to Exchange account, not pop/imap and smtp. POP and IMAP accounts should work for consumer accounts - even past the cutoff date for business accounts (Oct 2022). Outlook.com is not initiating all of the changes at the same time as the business side.

You won't lose the account - you just won't be able to use Outlook 2007 to sync with it. you'll need to upgrade, use another email client, or use Outlook on the web.

You have an outlook.com account? It is an Office 365 mailbox.

The changes are supposed to go into effect at the end of July - I don't know why it started early. It might be a temporary issue and work again in 3 days - they's been turning basic auth off in business accounts for 3 days as a warning.

Upcoming changes to Outlook.com may impact some legacy versions of Outlook for Windows (microsoft.com)

If you aren't ready to upgrade, pop and IMAP will work but won't sync calendar and contacts. eM client is a good replacement for Outlook if you don't want to upgrade office - its free for up to 2 email accounts.
