Hi,

I received what looks like a legitimate email from Microsoft in my Hotmail account. It was in the Junk folder and is still there. Attached is a screenshot.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the info. I checked my Microsoft security account as you recommended. None of the sign-ins are from the area listed in the screenshot I posted earlier. Conclusion: It's definitely spam.

I appreciate your timely assistance.

Joe

Hi, I'm Jon, an Independent Advisor and expert on Microsoft products.

I hope I can help you today.

I would always treat these type of emails with caution.

To check to see if there has been activity on your account do not click on any of the links in the email message but instead sign-in to the Security basics page for your Microsoft account here:

https://account.microsoft.com/security

Select Review activity and if there are any unusual sign-in attempts then you will be able to indicate that this wasn't you.

This page explains what Microsoft do if there's an unusual sign-in to your account:

I hope this helps,

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

All the best,

Jon

    Ron,

Thanks for the quick reply and the info you provided. As such, I am now convinced that it is spam and I deleted it.

Question: How do I determine if this email is legit?

Thanks for any info you can offer.

It's very difficult to check if an email is legit or a scam. They're getting better at it. I treat them all the same, as scam. I don't really care if the email is legit. I know how to sign in to my mailbox to change password if necessary.

As as side note, several days ago I received an email from paypal. Everything in the mail header checks out. Email is signed (DKIM), SPF passes (email was sent from authorized IP). I opened the email after checking the header. There's a link in the body and it does point to paypal. There are 2 suspicious indicators, they call me by a name that isn't mine. The other indicator is there's an 888 phone number to call. I googled it, none was found. I didn't call or click anything. All I did was open the email and forwarded it to paypal.
