Why do MS need 30/60 days for an email account to be deleted?

I received an email of a threatening tone demanding $660 dollars in Bitcoin if I did not want incriminating videos of me (which there aren't any) uploaded. They talked of Trojan software. Probably bluffing but I'm not taking any chances. I tried to close my Hotmail and Outlook accounts and it insists on the above timeline. That is way too long. I want them deleted and gone now. I thought MS was supposed to be safe? I only registered for an account because I have an Android/Google phone and didn't have any choice. I actually hate MS.

They are bluffing. It's a scam that has been going around for years now.

As long as you use a unique and long password your account should be secure. Using 2 factor authentication is even better.

The waiting period is for people who change there minds afterwards and there are many who do.

If your account isn't tied to anything then the waiting period isn't going to affect anything.

I'm not a big fan of Microsoft either, but they do have products I use, and my retirement portfolio has Microsoft stock in it.

By the way Android doesn't require a Microsoft account so not sure where you got that idea, but it prefers to have a Google account.
