I receive up to 100 unsolicited emails ( mainly loans and gambling) direct to my junk email folder every day. I do get some genuine emails arriving periodically there as well. All the email addresses are slightly different and many of the titles are slightly different as well. I have tried using the rules to stop them but they are ineffective. I don't wish to unsubscribe using the link - if it has one as that could lead to a virus entering my account/ laptop. What else can I do?

Rules only work on mail arriving in your Inbox. They won't work on emails in Junk folder because spam filter already detects and places them in the Junk folder. Unsubscribe will confirm that you have received their email, opened it and read it. They will send you more spam. Only legitimate companies honor requests to unsubscribe. Unsubscribing email/spam that you never ask for will achieve the opposite... you'll get more spam.

There isn't anything you can do other than regularly checking your Junk folder for legitimate email mistakenly placed there. Do not open spam. Ignore or delete them to maintain your Junk folder before it gets too many spam.

All we can do is leave Microsoft behind, unless they choose to develop server based tools that keep the MOST obvious junk from reaching our inboxes. I can easily visually detect junk email, yet they won't provide filters for me to do so; e.g. CrAzY subjects, addresses & formats. It is disingenuous for them to suggest we block senders when they change daily. So why would I trust their AI solutions if they won't them lose on tackling junk email BEFORE it reaches us?!

Hi, and thanks for reaching out. My name is Iya. I'm an independent advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I'll be happy to help you out today.

I’m sorry if you’re experiencing this issue. Blocking unwanted emails stops spam from reaching that email address permanently, but be careful how you go about doing it, because opening some spam emails can prompt a deluge of more junk emails from other spam accounts.

How to block spam email addresses on Outlook

Open Outlook and right-click the email whose address you want to block.

Scroll to Security Options, select Block Sender, and click.

Stopping spammers from flooding your inbox with unwanted junk emails is good, but changing your email privacy settings — and your habits — to reduce your exposure to spam in the first place is even better.

Always keep your email as private as possible. This means being careful about the people and organizations you share your address with. And use two-factor authentication to further secure your inbox.

Here’s how to adjust your email privacy settings to avoid spam emails and stop advertisers and other third parties from having access to your address.

    Change your settings on Outlook

    1. Click your account icon in the upper-right corner and select My Microsoft Account.
    2. Highlighting the Account icon and the "My Microsoft account" link in Microsoft Outlook
    3. Click Privacy, then click Privacy dashboard.

Highlighting the "Privacy" and "Privacy dashboard" options in Microsoft Outlook

    1. Click View app access details under Apps and services and remove access from any app sending you spam or other unwanted emails.

Another reason you could be getting spam is because you’ve actually signed up to receive it — knowingly or not. Removing your email address from spam subscription lists is a great way to thin out the junk in your inbox.

To begin, open your email and enter unsubscribe into your email search bar. That will bring up all the newsletters and mailing lists you can unsubscribe to, because all of those emails will have options to unsubscribe buried at the bottom of their email campaigns.

I hope that helps, and please feel free to let me know if you need any further assistance.

    Regards,

    Iya

This has been an issue for me too and has really got bad over the last year.

I did a bit of research to find out how my email address had been compromised. So, by using this web site - https://haveibeenpwned.com I found a few data breaches on web sites I subscribed to (one was 500PX a photography web community and no warning was sent to me!).

This is the most likely cause of such a large volume of spam and 'phishing' emails arriving in the Junk folder.

I just keep on deleting them and hoping I'll 'drop off' these lists eventually......

On no account try to unsubscribe from them.
