Why the New Outlook sucks! (the new 2023/24 mail app forced on us)

More a statement than a question, in hopes for Outlook / Microsoft developers taking some hints.

Why New Outlook sucks.

(a list of observations, after trying to adjust to it – and compared to Windows Mail app)

  • Over-constructed, bloated – cramped with useless items and features, e.g., “Notes”, “Conversation History”, “Shared with Me”, “Groups” … just to name the folder list. I want an app to open my emails … not a complete Nanny and life coach. Typical result of an ambitious, young tech nerd who needs to justify his existence, forgetting what good, logical and accommodating design is that serves the purpose and humans. Have a look at the whole concept of Bauhaus! Simplicity!!!
  • often slower than Mail
  • if you have several email accounts:

Each one opens its own drop-down list, running out of real estate immediately … over crowded. As in Mail – there should be only ONE folder list, for all accounts combined.

  • clicking on one account, one has to chose inbox each time, then close the endless list of useless folders to make room for another account to open its list … and chose inbox again …. ridiculous! Mail app opens inbox automatically, first … just by clicking on an account, regardless which account.
  • Forced advertisements … every time one opens Outlook.

Outlook is an app as part of the operating system, purchased with it. It is offensive and crooked to attach advertisements with it. What’s next … ads in Photos? In Explorer? Ads in Settings? … criminal!

  • Favorites … totally unnecessary … doubled up

Mail, on the other hand:

  • simple and logical, NOT over constructed
  • opens emails simpler, with better over view, less crowded, less useless options and ridiculous folders. As mentioned above … you see e.g., 5 email accounts, but only one folder list, permanently, which changes if you chose different folders in one account than in another. Main thing: only ONE folder list!
  • No advertisements!!
  • super fast
  • logical and easy navigating. Same as e.g., millions of tiny buttons or menu steps in a 80’s car stereo … as compared to a simple turn-knob. Human!!

There is much more … in absurd New Outlook nonsense and with very good Mail features that work. I’m sure I will discover more nonsense in Outlook the more I go through it.

In the end … why not keep what works fantastic … and has NO ads forced on us. I'll use mail app as long as possible or pick one from the app store ... deleting everything that carries the name "Outlook"

Mine just changed over and it is awful. I hate it so much. Anyway to get Mail back?

*edit* must have just hit the toggle. Was able to switch back. Going to have to find new program if that is forced on me next year.

I'm using Mail app, which is free and has NO ads.

I also explained many other reasons why it is so much better.

Mail app has a single folder list for multiple accounts without a drop-down list for each account.

Maybe we are talking about different things here.

Maybe you have never discovered the Mail app?

the mail app is NOT a view of Outlook or Outlook 365.

I don't have (and don't want) any version of Outlook, never had.

Just want to keep the Mail app as is.

I don't have any Pop accounts. All regular outlook.com email accounts and one School/Work account.

The only form of outlook I have (if "have" is the correct word) is an option to access emails

via web mail, which I never do.

Mail app just comes free with Windows10 / 11 and is ad-free.

No need to have outlook installed.

Amen to everything that's been said. Collapsing folders jumping around, then folders adjusting themselves like they know they shouldn't be jumping around. Please don't take my Mail away from me and stop trying to fix something that Ain't broken.

I found the easiest way to switch back is to type 'outlook.exe' in the lower left search bar next to start. (or Run Command). Type 'enter' and the old version comes up. Switch off the "Try new outlook' in the upper right.

I must admit, my use of the new outlook was short lived. After trying to see my contacts from different accounts was so convoluted, that I said enough. and switched back.

I'm used to Microsoft supposedly 'Simplifying' outlook and the Office suite over the years taking away some functionality almost every time, but this was the worst.

    Good Luck
