RSS Feeds: Outlook Desktop v. Outlook.com

When using RSS Feeds, one can add a news feed to Outlook Desktop using the normal procedure of a right click on the folder.

However, there are two issues with RSS Feeds related to Outlook.com.

  1. There is no option to add an RSS Feed using the same process nor anything I can find within Outlook.com to add a feed even though the RSS Feed folder is visible.
  2. The RSS Feeds that I am able to subscribe to through Outlook Desktop do not show on Outlook.com

RSS Feeds are making a comeback and from the news, Google is adding the feature back into Chrome in the interim browsers can use add-ins to use the feature. But for the MS folks, this valuable tool is not available in Office 365. Why? And, is there a solution to either of my challenges?

Finally, from a licensing perspective, is the RSS Feed feature different for purchases directly through MS, a third-party provider like GoDaddy, or at the academic/University level licenses?

That's because his instructions are incorrect. As he states, "Outlook.com does not currently support the addition of RSS feeds in the same way as Outlook Desktop." So his right-clicking on the folder and linking to a support article for Outlook on Windows is nonsensical.

Bottom line: there is no way to add an RSS feed in MS365 online using Outlook.

The only actual workaround is to use a third-party native reader or online one such as this: https://rss.app

    George,

I appreciate your help. I have tried to follow the steps you provided, but I have had no luck other than through Desktop.

I am using Outlook both via outlook.office.com and outlook.live.com; I doubt this is the problem, but I can use an existing RSS folder or create a new one, but I cannot add a feed in any way.

Given the research that I've conducted, I think it is all very odd, but any other insight would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

    Dear Patrick,
Outlook.com does not currently support the addition of RSS feeds in the same way as Outlook Desktop. However, there is a workaround that involves using the Microsoft Edge browser. You can follow these steps:

    1. Open Microsoft Edge and navigate to the website that has the RSS feed you want to add.
    2. Click on the RSS feed icon in the address bar.
    3. Copy the URL of the RSS feed from the address bar.
    4. Go to Outlook.com and create a new folder for your RSS feeds, if you haven't already done so.
    5. Right-click on the new folder and select "Add a feed".
    6. Paste the URL of the RSS feed into the "Feed URL" field and click "Subscribe".

As for your second issue, RSS feeds that are added in Outlook Desktop will not automatically appear in Outlook.com. This is because they are two separate applications with different functionalities. You will need to add the RSS feeds separately in each application.

As for your question about licensing, the RSS feed feature is not different depending on where you purchase Microsoft Office. The feature is included in all versions of Microsoft Office that support it. The availability of the feature may vary depending on the version of Office and the specific application (Outlook Desktop vs. Outlook.com), but it is not related to the licensing of the software.

    Best Regards,
    George A.

George, I'm unable to add RSS feed in outlook.com. I get all the way through step 4, but I cannot perform step 5 and 6 of your instructions. Why won't "Add a feed" appear when I right-click on a new folder?
