Phantom Outlook.com email address and sync with Desktop app

Hello,

I have a Microsoft account, based on an email hosted at another provider than Microsoft (OVH in France) with my own domain name.
I have a Microsoft 365 Family subscription.

I use Outlook Desktop app with my OVH account (IMAP) and all works well.

I use a locally hosted pst for holding tasks, calendar and contacts

If I connect to Outlook.com with that account, it shows me a "cummy" email address outlook******@outlook.com where "xxxxxx" represents a random serie of letter and figure. That email address cen send mail through Outlook.com.

However, it can neither receive emails, not be added to Outlook desktop app as an email account (message from Microsoft is that this email address does not exist)

My questions:

1- Is it possible to sync my OVH account with Outlook.com?

2- Is it possible to sync my tasks, calendar and contacts with Outlook.com?

My goals:

1- Be able to sync my outlook app (OVH account) messages flagged for follow-up with the ToDo app

2- Sync calendar and contacts on the web

3- Access my mails through the Outlook.com site

The point is that I keep using my OVH IMAP account. When it receives calendar invites, it does not go to the "outlook alias" account, but to the local calendar linked to my OVH IMAP account, and that one is not synchronized with anything

If there is a calendar in the data file, the event will be added to it.

    You have 3 options:

    1. Manually move events to the outlook.com calendar as they are added.
    2. Move everything in the this computer only folders then close Outlook and rename the IMAP data file. Outlook will create a new data file without the this computer only folders. but it will occasionally recreate it when you receive a new event. (The IMAP data file is at %localappdata%\Microsoft\outlook)
    3. Move everything in the this computer only folders then close Outlook and delete the IMAP account, then re-add it. Outlook is less likely to re-create the calendar folder.

    Thank you.

Based on Diane's anser, I changed the alias and could add the account to Outlook.

    It works... but.

My main account is not an Outlook account - it's an IMAP account at OVH (French service provider company).

I know have in my Outlook desktop app:

    1 - OVH IMAP account

    2 - Outlook alias account

The point is that I keep using my OVH IMAP account. When it receives calendar invites, it does not go to the "outlook alias" account, but to the local calendar linked to my OVH IMAP account, and that one is not synchronized with anything

Saving contacts saves them well in "outlook alias" account contact folder, which gets synchronized.

    So, from my goals above

1- Be able to sync my outlook app (OVH account) messages flagged for follow-up with the ToDo app

2- Sync calendar and contacts on the web

3- Access my mails through the Outlook.com site

1 does not work due to 3 not working

2 works OK for contacts, but not for calendar invites

3 does not work as I don't see how I could sync my OVH account mail with the outlook.com site

Again, thanks to you two for your help.

If you are using Outlook for windows desktop - file > Add account and enter the outlook.com address and click connect. Enter the password when asked. If it is your only Outlook.com or Microsoft 365 Work or School account, the outlook.com data file will be set as default data file.

In Calendar, switch to a list view and drag any events on the 'old' calendar to the outlook.com calendar. Same for contacts and tasks.

See this article: https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/people/contacts-are-missing-when-you-click-the-to-button/ to show contacts first when you click the To button. (Second section on the page - 'Is the expected address book set as the default address book?' )

Thank you, it looks like it is what I was (partially) searching for.

I still have to investigate how to further set it up.

Hi, I'm Diane and I'm happy to help you today.

The "Outlook_ugly-code" address is because you have a non-Microsoft address set as primary on your Microsoft account. Set an outlook.com alias as primary and it will go away.

    1. Yes, but you need to add it to Outlook desktop using an outlook.com alias.
    2. If you use an outlook.com alias, you can sync calendar and contacts and tasks that are in the outlook.com account - if they are in an IMAP or pst data file, you will need to move them into outlook.com's folders.

Microsoft has more information on the weird address in this article: Outlook.com email account appears as "outlook_[long series of letters and numbers]@outlook.com" in Outlook for Windows https://support.microsoft.com/office/90ed7938-7f21-4cb5-a69d-a3b79ea4eafd

Let us know how it goes, we're here to help you further if needed.
