Outlook for Desktop rules do not run Automatically

Anonymous

I have been trying for over a year to get outlook rules to run without having to be run manually. The current version of outlook I am using is:

Microsoft® Outlook® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2309 Build 16.0.16827.20166) 64-bit

Despite trying the following possible solutions I have never gotten a rule to run automatically:

  1. Clearing the outlook cache.
  2. Deleting all rules and completely uninstalling and reinstalling outlook.
  3. Installing outlook on a completely different computer, deleting all rules and creating the rule again.
  4. Renaming the .srs file in C:\Users%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook to.old.
  5. Disabling/enabling the the option for "Enable rules on all messages downloaded from RSS Feeds".

Is there anything else I can try to get rules to run automatically?

Thank you.

    Hi Sherry,

    Thank you for your response.

    1. I only have one rule in the list which I have already tried removing and remaking.
    2. I have repaired my outlook installation as you instructed and tested in outlook. The rule still does not run automatically.
    3. I have not toggled on the "Try the new Outlook" option.

Please let me know what other suggestions you have. Considering how many similar threads there are on this issue it is likely it is a bug which needs to be fixed on Microsoft's end.

    Hi Sherry,

I do not have access to the Office 365 Admin Center as I am not a Microsoft 365 admin. To be clear the issue I am experiencing occurs on both the following versions of outlook, and with both my personal and work emails:

Microsoft® Outlook® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2309 Build 16.0.16827.20166) 64-bit (this is installed on my work computer)

    and

Microsoft® Outlook® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2310 Build 16.0.16924.20054) 64-bit (this is installed on my personal PC)

Is there a way to submit a bug request as a regular user?

    Thank you.

    Dear Ocman76,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to assist you.

Based on your description, you've been experiencing issues with Outlook rules not running automatically. Here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Check if the rules are in the correct order: Make sure that the rules you want to run automatically are listed in the correct order. Rules are executed in the order they appear in the list, so if a rule that should run automatically is listed after another rule, it may not run.
    2. Repair your Outlook installation: Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Microsoft Office > Change > Repair. This will repair your Outlook installation and may fix any issues that are preventing rules from running automatically.
    3. Since you chose new Outlook as the category, I was wondering whether you have toggled the "Try the new Outlook" at the up-right corner to awitch to new Outlook? If yes, would you please try to toggle it back to classic version and check whether the issue persists?

I hope these steps help you resolve the issue. If there is any update or I misunderstand you, please feel free to let me know. I will continue to assist you. Your understanding and co-operation are highly appreciated.

Thanks for your precious time. Have a nice day.

    Sincerely,

    Sherry | Microsoft Community Moderator
