Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client

On all my other PCs the rightclick "send to" "Mail recipient" command works. I use it a lot to reduce the size of jpeg files.

However on my ThinkPad P16s running Win 22H2 64bit with 64bit Office, I get the famous error message:

"Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client"

I have made a new send to Mail recipient shortcut as outlined by @Diane Poremsky here and it works fine. However that shortcut does not have the functionality of reducing the size of jpeg files when attaching them to an email.

I have followed several suggestions in this forum on how to resolve this issue, but none have worked so far.

Hopefully this will be resolved this time.

    Unfortunately no joy.

I had already done the two steps without any progress.

So I did them again. After repairing Office, the error is still the same.

I then proceeded to uninstall office using the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant. It worked for about 30 minutes to uninstall Office 365.

I assumed that after the uninstallation the default mail client would be reset to Microsoft Mail. But the right click send to command resulted in the following error message:

I then proceeded to reinstall Office 365. I am still getting the above error message when using the right click sent to command.

Doesn't anyone at Microsoft have a clue where this error comes from? It can't be necessary to reinstall Windows to cure this annoying issue. It must be easy to define the default mail client. Why a freshly installed Outlook 365 should not be able to fulfill the messaging request eludes me.

    Thanks, Leonardo

    I have tried the suggestions:

    • I could not find the command Tools > Options > Others mentioned in suggestion 2
    • The registry edit led to the error message not appearing any more. But Outlook didn't launch either when executing the send to command

There must me something else amiss. From reading various posts, it's probably in the registry somewhere

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community,

I understand that you are experiencing an issue with the "send to" "Mail recipient" command in Outlook on your ThinkPad P16s running Windows 22H2 64bit with 64bit Office. This issue seems to be related to the default mail client settings in your system.

Here are a few steps you can try:

    • Set Outlook as Default Mail Client: Go to the Windows search box, type “Default app settings”, and click on it. Under the Email section, select Outlook as the default mail client
    • Check Outlook Settings: In Outlook, go to Tools > Options > Others Tab and make Outlook your default e-mail program
    • Perform Online Repair: Follow the complete guide on this support article - Repair an Office application - Microsoft Support
    • Registry Edit: This is a more advanced step and should be done with caution. You need to remove the whole key from registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Clients\\Mail]. NOTE: Please note that editing the registry can have serious consequences if not done correctly, so proceed with caution and consider backing up your registry first. If you are not confident in doing this step, please skip it

If the issue still persists after repairing your Office installation, please try uninstalling and reinstalling Office.

I hope this helps resolve your issue. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Sincerely,

    Leonardo_Y
