Setup process "Try new outlook"

Hello,

I have started the setup process for the new Outlook because I was informed that I could switch back to the old Outlook at any time using a switch. Now, I am unable to complete the setup process because I receive the message "This account is not supported in Outlook for Windows due to the license provided by your company or school. Try signing in with a different account or switch to Outlook on the web."

I have a Microsoft 365 Business Basic license.

When I click on troubleshooting, I receive the following information:

{"SessionId":"e5adce2b-98ad-4fe6-b28f-1560333af3b6","Timestamp":1695364662122}

How can I either complete the setup process (ideally) or cancel the setup process and revert to the old Outlook?

Thank you in advance!

Thank you, Microsoft, for this utterly nonsensical change in your licensing application. This was the final push I needed to stop using Hosted Exchange for my domain and my wifes domain.

Been using Hosted Exchange for years. Been really happy with it. But the cost keeps increasing, by removing the Hosted Exchange licensing forced us to adopt Microsoft 365 Business Basic, costing about twice the amount for adding features we never use. The licensing cost keeps increasing almost yearly for no apparent reason.

I've been sticking with it as I prefer Exchange Active Sync over IMAP.IDLE as it handles notifications better. When reading an e-mail on one device, the notification isn't stuck on other devices.

But this finally pushed me to reconsider. We are forced to pay for Microsoft 365 Business Basic twice, just because me and my wife have two different domains. The cost is immense, considering how we use the service. And you keep on bundling additional stuff to increase the price, even though these features has no value to us.

Locking us out of "New Outlook" even though we already pay for access to desktop applications via Microsoft 365 Family, and we both also have desktop applications licensed through our employer, is beyond stupid. This is nickle and diming at it's finest. Requiring you to have a license allowing for desktop application per mailbox instead of the application level is infuriating, to say the least.

Just moved us both from Hosted Exchange / Microsoft 365 over to iCloud+ as we already have this option as part of our Apple One Family subscription. The move was easy, the functionality is pretty much the same, and notifications are working great as Apple doesn't rely on IMAP.IDLE for notifications. This saves us a lot of money per year.

And to just make it all even more silly, guess what? We can utilise "New Outlook" without any issues as it supports adding e-mails from iCloud. So by removing our Microsoft 365 Business Basic subscriptions and moving our e-mail from Hosted Exchange / Microsoft 365 over to iCloud+, we save money, and we are allowed to use "New Outlook".

If this is the case - what a bunch of nonsense! We've been using Outlook for years on the Business Basic tier. Why take that away from us? Wouldn't that just encourage users to use less secure methods of connecting to their mail like SMTP?

    Dear Katherine,

I have a similar issue where one of my work account cannot login in the new outlook with the same error message "This account is not supported in Outlook for Windows due to the license provided by your company or school. Try signing in with a different account or switch to Outlook on the web."

The current situation is that I worked part-time in two different company. So, I'm using my personal Laptop and personal Microsoft 365 for the Outlook. But then, I can add 1 of the work email but I cannot add the other one. I'm not sure what's the issue here. Does this means that I cannot use the new Outlook for both different work email? And if I'm not wrong, the new outlook will replace the old one in 2024, so what would be the best suggestion to do?

    Thank you

    Ardy

    Dear Dominik Odermatt

    Thanks for choosing Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, I know the scenario you met. For this, please be kindly to try to the following suggestions and check if these can help you revert to old Outlook.

    1. Use Windows search and type in outlook and check if you can see two outlooks. If so, you just need to un-install the new one and use the old one to log in. Since Once you Toggle on “New Outlook” button New Outlook is install,Old Outlook is still there.

    1. Try to use Regedit.exe like the following screeshot. You can get more detailed information from Toggling out of the new Outlook for Windows preview - Microsoft Support.

    1. If when you open the old app, the new version opens instead
    • clicking on outlook.exe directly or a shortcut.
    • For new Outlook is olk.exe.

Hope these can help. If there is any update or the scenario still persists, please be kindly to let me know. I will continue to help you based on the information you provide. Your understanding and co-operation are highly appreciated.

Thanks for your precious time. Have a nice day.

    Sincerely,

    Katherine
