Why the New Outlook sucks! (the new 2023/24 mail app forced on us)

More a statement than a question, in hopes for Outlook / Microsoft developers taking some hints.

Why New Outlook sucks.

(a list of observations, after trying to adjust to it – and compared to Windows Mail app)

  • Over-constructed, bloated – cramped with useless items and features, e.g., “Notes”, “Conversation History”, “Shared with Me”, “Groups” … just to name the folder list. I want an app to open my emails … not a complete Nanny and life coach. Typical result of an ambitious, young tech nerd who needs to justify his existence, forgetting what good, logical and accommodating design is that serves the purpose and humans. Have a look at the whole concept of Bauhaus! Simplicity!!!
  • often slower than Mail
  • if you have several email accounts:

Each one opens its own drop-down list, running out of real estate immediately … over crowded. As in Mail – there should be only ONE folder list, for all accounts combined.

  • clicking on one account, one has to chose inbox each time, then close the endless list of useless folders to make room for another account to open its list … and chose inbox again …. ridiculous! Mail app opens inbox automatically, first … just by clicking on an account, regardless which account.
  • Forced advertisements … every time one opens Outlook.

Outlook is an app as part of the operating system, purchased with it. It is offensive and crooked to attach advertisements with it. What’s next … ads in Photos? In Explorer? Ads in Settings? … criminal!

  • Favorites … totally unnecessary … doubled up

Mail, on the other hand:

  • simple and logical, NOT over constructed
  • opens emails simpler, with better over view, less crowded, less useless options and ridiculous folders. As mentioned above … you see e.g., 5 email accounts, but only one folder list, permanently, which changes if you chose different folders in one account than in another. Main thing: only ONE folder list!
  • No advertisements!!
  • super fast
  • logical and easy navigating. Same as e.g., millions of tiny buttons or menu steps in a 80’s car stereo … as compared to a simple turn-knob. Human!!

There is much more … in absurd New Outlook nonsense and with very good Mail features that work. I’m sure I will discover more nonsense in Outlook the more I go through it.

In the end … why not keep what works fantastic … and has NO ads forced on us. I'll use mail app as long as possible or pick one from the app store ... deleting everything that carries the name "Outlook"

I also reverted to the mail app because of the ads. On top of that you have to pay a monthly subscription for an ad free version. Sounds like extortion to me. It reminds me of neiberhood gangs telling you to pay for protection or suffer the consiquences.

I noticed that an option was removed from the mail app. When I type in the recipients address in the "To:" field I get a list of email addresses that are no longer valid. I used to be able to delete the recipients history to remove those addresses but I can't find the option anymore.

I suppose that Microsoft will eventually terminate the Mail app to force users to move to Outlook mail app. Its been done before. I'm looking at different options like Thunderbird, Mailspring or Mailbird in the event that this will hapens.

Not only do I agree with everything you’ve said, but I might also add that the People section of the new app is very unstable and severely limited. I tried to import my contacts and the results were disastrous. I had to remove them manually and was limited to 10 at a time. Turns out, all your contacts are stored on a cloud which in itself is very limiting. Why do I need to have my personal contacts stored on a cloud and not on my own computer? Some nerd designer must think he can better manage my personal info than I can. Unless the new Outlook gets some major improvements, I’m going elsewhere.

There we go ... another nonsense!

Big Brother and Big Nanny trying to do everything for you. Outlook like a helicopter parent.:-)

Some bored tech nerd is trying to proof his existence and position.

Just stay with mail app as long as provided and after download it from the app store and keep using it.

It works fantastic. Microsoft: don't fix it if it ain't broke!

And keep pestering Feed back with complaints.

BTW: I have completely uninstalled / eliminated everything OneDrive.

    Hi KCA,

answering to you both, KCA AND wst459 below:

    • yes - you must have hit it by accident. It usually only asks and if you don't like it you can switch back. It is no problem to switch back. Annoying though are the constant offers and the stupid toggle.
    • if for some reason there is no more toggle to switch back, uninstall everything Outlook and re-install the Mail app from the app store (or try Repair ..?)
    • from what I researched Windows Mail app is going to be working till end of 2024 (not 100% sure about the time span) beyond that, you can always keep it or re-download it from the App Store and continue using it, as I found out, similarly, to Movie Maker / still working nicely / downloadable, even after discontinued years ago.
    • another option, if all fails, are various simple mail apps you find on the app store, most of them free and very similar to the Mail app.

So, at this point I completely ignore everything "Outlook" and keep using Mail app. as long as regularly installed / working. Unfortunately there is no way of getting rid of the toggle (in the Mail app). However, there are many articles about how to get rid of it in Outlook, if someone uses the regular Outlook app.

BTW - as seen in a previous post, some seem to confuse the Windows Mail app with a view / option in the Outlook app, desktop or

Outlook 365. Here, we are talking about the stand-alone, simple, Windows Mail app that comes with Win10 and 11, free, ad-free ... and has nothing to do with Outlook. I have everything deleted/uninstalled with the name Outlook to it. The Windows Mail app handles everything as good, if not better, faster, is more logical, simpler. Outlook, regardless if desktop app, 365 or New Outlook is all completely unnecessary and over-constructed, let alone full of ads (unless you pay for an ad-free version.)

    Anyways - hope this helps
