Email Format in Outlook

Outlook suddenly has a strange email format. The message is shown as about 5.5" wide if I turn on the ruler, ant the font is a monospaced sans serif font. Selecting different fonts doesn't work nor doe expanding the page width beyond 5.5".

If I start Outlook in Safe mode, everything seems OK, but Removing all of the add-ins did not help.

How do I get back to the default operation of Outlook?

Maybe problem is that you accidentally turned on 'immersive reading' (menu bar under view menu)?

I had the same problem and stumbled upon this thread. My problem was solved after disabling 'immersive reading'...

I had already done steps 1 through 5 to no avail. When I attempted step 6, I found that there is no compatibility tab. Step 7 was a little tricky because there are 2 video chips, the built in from Intel and one from nVidia. I updated both, but the situation hasn't changed.

BTW, I totally removed Microsoft 365 with Revo Uninstaller. When I reinstalled Microsoft 365, my email was still set up in Outlook. I still had the odd looking presentation in Outlook (extremely narrow page and no way to specify a font).

Thank you. It's actually on a friend's computer, and I haven't been able yo get in touch with him. I was able to reproduce the problem on my own Outlook and "fix" it. I sent him instructions (he needs more detail than me). I'll revisit this thread if it doesn't work.

    Update:

I did a clean boot and I totally removed McAfee Antivirus. The situation did not improve. Outlook only displays properly in Safe Mode.

    Dear D2DCS,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

If you're experiencing formatting issues with Outlook emails, and starting Outlook in Safe Mode resolves the problem, it indicates that the issue may be related to an add-in or an external factor. Here are some steps you can try to restore Outlook to its default operation:

    1. Disable Add-ins:
      • Open Outlook in normal mode.
      • Go to "File" and click on "Options."
      • In the Outlook Options window, select "Add-ins."
      • In the Manage box, click "COM Add-ins" and then click "Go."
      • Uncheck all the add-ins listed and click "OK."
    2. Reset View Settings:
      • In Outlook, go to the "View" tab.
      • Click on the "View Settings" button.
      • Click on "Reset Current View" and then confirm.
    3. Create a New Outlook Profile:
      • Sometimes, issues can be related to the Outlook profile. You can create a new profile and set it as the default.
      • Go to "Control Panel" > "Mail" > "Show Profiles."
      • Click "Add" to create a new profile, and follow the prompts.
      • Set the new profile as the default.
    4. Repair Office Installation:
      • Go to "Control Panel" > "Programs" > "Programs and Features."
      • Find Microsoft Office in the list, right-click it, and choose "Change."
      • Select "Quick Repair" or "Online Repair" and follow the on-screen instructions.
    5. Check Windows Display Settings:
      • Ensure that your Windows display settings are configured correctly.
      • Right-click on the desktop and select "Display Settings."
      • Adjust the screen resolution and scale settings as needed.
    6. Check DPI Settings:
      • Some display issues can be related to DPI settings.
      • Right-click on the Outlook shortcut, choose "Properties," go to the "Compatibility" tab, and check "Override high DPI scaling behavior."
    7. Update Graphics Drivers:
      • Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause display issues.

    Thank you,
