Issues with new outlook not marking emails as read or deleting from server when I delete them

In new outlook, I have mark emails as read as soon as they are opened. They initially show as read but the number of unread emails doesn't always reduce and if I select show all unread emails most of what I have read show as unread again. This is very frustrating as I then have to open all the emails again on my iphone to mark them as read. I also have an issue with deleting emails in New outlook as they still show as available on the server so do not delete on my other devices.

HI Fabio - I came across this link having similar issues with "new" Outlook not marking messages as read.

It seems that Outlook now has a new option to change the "read message" settings which I am not aware existed before. Follow these steps:-

    1. Go to the gear icon in the top right corner, select mail, select "Message handling".
    2. Look at the options for "Mark as read" which can be tweaked.
    3. I found that the default setting on my Outlook was to "Mark displayed items as read after 5 seconds" which I found annoying so have changed.
    4. Make sure the setting matches your preference.

    I hope this helps.

Yes, I have the same problem.

The New Outlook somehow deteriorates the user-experience than the earlier version. Another example is

    * Earlier outlook allowed copy attachments between emails, using standard right-click -> copy and then paste in new email.

    * New outlook does not have this.

I'm switching back to earlier Outlook as that was much simpler and faster. Newer Outlook is cheesy but lacks useful features and is slow.

    Regards,

    Pekon

My issue is in the old Outlook (desktop app), I used to be able to set it so it wouldn't get marked as read until I physically opened the email.

Now the only options are as soon as it's selected, after 5 seconds, or when selection changes, or Not at all.

But if I select not at all, physically opening the email doesn't even mark it as read.....I have to click the read/unread button. This is not useful.......

Landed here after a brief web search.
I've been experiencing the same issue as above, for the last two weeks.
I use exclusively Outlook desktop, with the "New Outlook" feature turned on.
Most, but not all, of the emails I got in the last week are marked as unread. If I read them or mark them as read manually, they just switch back to unread after a few seconds, or as soon as I switch Outlook folders or restart the app.

The only temporary workaround I've found is to open the classic Outlook app, mark the emails as read, and then open the "New Outlook" one, then it is all marked as read.

    Hi Jeremy

I just use the desktop app. One other thing I have just remembered is that if I delete an email that is already marked as unread, when it gets to the Deleted Items folder it is marked as unread again, so I have to go and mark all as read.

    Regards

    Nic
