Rules in outlook don't work well or don't work at all

I tried adding rules to try to automatically move known spam to a separate folder. First I tried setting up rules where the message text contained a known word, but it seemed to not work at all. Is capitalization used?

It also is not clear whether adding more than one word means it will only move the mail if all words are detected or if any word is detected. The latter option would mean having to write a lot less rules, as would pattern matching.

I also tried to clicked on the ... when a mail was open and then pressed "advanced actions" and "make rule". These mails use fake addresses but the same usernames. It entered the username but then upon trying to save there was a pop up "can't make rule now" and "try again later".

It's not "The rules exceed the rules quota established for your mailbox", there's only 4 at the moment.
It's not "The rules have errors or conflicts with other rules or settings"
The rules are not disabled and they never worked. With "corrupted by a glitch or an update" are you still talking about the web version?

The same with "The rules are not compatible with the version of Outlook you are using", I don't see how that would make any sense for the web version.

Is there any documentation on what regex features are supported? Would | in regex work to match multiple words using a single rule?

Thanks Sharon for actually understanding what we are asking. I too have the same problem. I appreciate the info of using the beginning of the name and .com perhaps that will help.

The problem is why can't the blocked emails just go to delete? I have to check my junk folder to make sure that nothing important is there. I don't want to also have to check emails that I have previously blocked.

Why can't they just go to delete when they are blocked. We obviously don't want to see them again.

    Thanks so much.

Hello Wallby, I'm Shalom and I'd happily help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself. I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble with Outlook rules. Here are some steps you can try: 1. Ensure Your Outlook Rules Are Enabled: Open the Outlook app and click the File menu in the top left corner. In the Info tab, click the Manage Rules & Alerts button. Under the Email Rules tab, make sure the boxes next to your rules are checked. 2. Fix Outlook’s Corrupt SRS File: Close Outlook if the app is running on your computer. Open the Windows Run dialog box by pressing Windows + R. Type the following in the box and press Enter: %appdata%\\Microsoft\\Outlook. Right-click the Outlook.srs file and choose Rename. Change the file name to Outlook.srs.old. Launch Outlook and the app will automatically re-create the SRS file. 3. Reduce the Space Used by Your Outlook Rules: Outlook restricts the amount of storage space that your rules can use. You’re only allowed to create rules that fit within the 256 KB space. If your rules use more space than this, you’ll have trouble using them. In this case, you can perform a few actions to reduce the space occupied by your rules. 4. Edit and Rename Your Outlook Rule: Try to avoid lengthy names to reduce their size. To do so, click File > Manage Rules & Alerts, select the rule you'd like to edit, and select Change Rule. Change its name and save it again³. 5. Delete Old Rules That You Don't Use Anymore I hope these steps will help you resolve your issue with Outlook rules not working. If you need more assistance, please let me know. Best Regards, Shalom

Your reply is off topic. This post applies to "Outlook / Web / Outlook.com".

Are the messages in your inbox? Rules run after the junk filter and only on mail in the inbox.

Regex is not supported in rules.

These mails use fake addresses but the same usernames.

Create a rule that works for words in the header.
