"New" Outlook makes all links web URLs, including network links

I use Outlook for work daily and know multiple other people who do as well. We are currently experiencing an issue where both the online and "New" version of Outlook will not let us insert a link to a network location. We share network drives and often send links to each other when files are large, or when we want the other person to see everything in a folder vs. one attached document. When accessing Outlook via web, all inserted links revert to web URLs with no obvious way to override that. The Insert Link option actually reads "Web Address (URL)" where you enter the location. We have also noticed people who have the "New" version of Outlook activated having this same problem on their desktop app. Anyone using the older Outlook format (which has the "Try the new Outlook" toggle turned off) can still send links correctly.

Is this a known issue? Is there any way to override it?

    Dear Ama'h

    Thanks for choosing Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, I know your requirement. I understand that you are experiencing an issue with inserting network links in the "New" version of Outlook. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.

Regarding your concern, I would like to inform you that this is a known issue with the "New" version of Outlook. Currently, there is no way to override this behavior. However, our development team is aware of this issue and is working on a fix.

In the meantime, you can use the older version of Outlook or use a workaround by copying and pasting the network link into the body of the email instead of using the "Insert Link" option.

I know sometimes it is really inconvenient for users. I can understand your mood. Thanks for bring this to Microsoft Community. Since I think your idea is really constructive. I will report this to Microsoft as soon as possible. Meanwhile, I sincerely suggest you post this precious suggestion to Microsoft. Microsoft will update their product based on customers' suggestions. Believe your suggestion will help many other people in the future. Your understanding and co-operation are highly appreciated.

Found a workaround for anyone looking for one.

In the URL section, paste this before the network path:

    https://outlook.office.com/local/path/file:\*path to network file/folder*

Currently looking for a way to auto populate this but unsure if there is a way.

I tried adding that text (https://outlook.office.com/local/path/file:) into the URL section, assuming that I needed to replace *path to network file/folder* with my network location text. It did not work.

This issue still persists and is still a major problem with "New Outlook" for our user base.

Local network file shares are not 'going away' soon enough to skip making this work for "New Outlook" - many functions cannot be moved to Sharepoint/OneDrive locations yet due to regulatory issues, the 4gb file size limitations, egress issues, and linking for certain file types. Please get this sorted.
