Microsoft Outlook will not open.

Hi,

All other desktop applications open without issue, it is just outlook. I have followed all applicable processes in this article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/error-0xc0000142-when-you-start-an-office-application-64b3a500-ee74-4b66-b370-9d607ef92b6c and it still will not open. I can access emails online but it won't open using my desktop application.

No matter how I attempt (safe mode/normal/run dialog) it will open for a brief second, and then close without an error message. It does ask if I want to open in safe mode but acts exactly the same as when I open not in safe mode. I have Microsoft Office 365.

Thanks.

    Hello Anna836,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community!

Since the basic troubleshooting in the article you added did not work, we can try advanced troubleshooting.

    A. Start in Safe Mode and disable Add-ins:

you can find the detailed steps in thisStart Outlook in Safe Mode and Disable Add-ins article

To open Outlook in Safe Mode:

1- Open the Run dialog box by pressing Windows Key + R.

2- In the Open box, type "Outlook /safe", then choose OK.

3- If prompted, enter your password and choose Accept.

    To disable Add-ins:

    1- On Outlook, click File

    2- Click Options

    3- Click Add-ins.

4- At the bottom of the View and Manage Office Add-ins, make sure the Manage box shows COM Add-ins, and then choose Go.

5- Clear all selected check boxes, and then choose OK.

    B. Deleting cache files using the Outlook Cleanup Tool:

1- Open the Run dialog box by pressing Windows Key + R.

2- Type outlook /cleanviews and press Enter.

3- This command will clear the Outlook cache and rebuild the view settings. It might take a few minutes depending on the amount of data stored in the cache.

    4- Restart Outlook.

If this does not work you can Manually delete cache files:

    1- Close Outlook.

2- Navigate to the folder containing various Outlook cache files by clicking WIN + R and type

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook

3- Select all files in the folder (except the "Outlook.pst" file if present, as it's your actual email data).

4- The selected files can be deleted or moved to a new folder.

    5- Restart Outlook.

    C. Create a new Outlook profile:

Sometimes, the problem might lie within your existing profile settings. Creating a new profile can help rule this out.

1- Close Outlook if it's open.

2- Go to the Control Panel

3- Click Mail (or Mail (Microsoft Outlook) in Windows 11).

    4- Click Show Profiles.

    5- Click Add.

6- Enter a name for the new profile and click OK.

7- Configure your email account settings

8- Limit the "Emails to keep offline" to a month or so

    9- click Next.

10- Set the new profile as the default and click Finish.

11- Restart Outlook and check if it opens.

    Best Regards
