I'm trying to download all of my emails, contacts, etc from outlook as my previous grad school email is closing alumni emails. There are instructions online that say to:
Export all Office 365 emails into a PST file using Outlook:
1. Open Outlook and Click the File tab.
2. Click Open & **Export>>**Click Import/Export.
3. Select Export to a file and click Next.
4. Select Outlook Data File (.pst) and click Next.
5. Select the folders that you want to export and click Next.
6. Browse to the location to save a PST file with a filename.
7. Click Finish and all the selected folders are exported into .pst.
Yet when I open outlook I don't see a file tab.
There's also this advice that says:
You can backup all your Office 365 data, including Outlook email accounts and calendar, by following these steps: 1) Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings. 2) Select the email account you want to backup, then click “Export”. 3) Follow the steps in the Import and Export Wizard to backup your email account to a .pst file. 4) Repeat the steps for each email account you have. 5) For the calendar, you can export it to an iCalendar file (.ics) by going to File > Save As > iCalendar. Note: You should save the backed up .pst and .ics files to an external device, such as a USB drive, to ensure you have a copy after you reinstall Windows.
I've tried to get to account settings in different ways but I'm not seeing any place where I can click export.
I could use some help.

Outlook doesn't have a File tab.
only Home, View, and Help
Hello Carolyn,
I am sorry about the challenge you are facing trying to export your emails.
You are not seeing the File tab and every other step because you are using the new Outlook app.
To the best of my knowledge, the new Outlook app stores emails as EML files and does not support exportation of emails yet. Microsoft is aware of the situation and might include this feature in future updates. You can also submit feedback to Microsoft Outlook development team to make them aware that the feature is still being required by users. Kindly click on the Help tab and select Feedback to do that.
You can switch to the Classic Outlook app and export your emails from there.
I hope this information is helpful.
Kind Regards, Rita.
Those instructions you posted are for users who have the Outlook App installed on their computer. If your not seeing those options then your checking your email through the browser like Edge, Firefox, or Chrome.
Best option I have seen online is setting up a personal account, Gmail, hotmail, yahoo, or other.
This is not a viable solution for me.
I don't want to transfer my Outlook emails to yet another online service - I want them stored and available locally on Thunderbird (my email client).
I am using Hotmail/Outlook from a browser (Firefox): https://outlook.live.com/mail
Here's what's not useful to me:
-transfer emails to another online service.
-transfer one email at a time as a PDF file ( I have thousands of emails over 15 years in Hotmail)
-transfer one email at a time as an .eml file (ditto)
Is there a commercial utility I can buy to do this, or am I just out of luck?
Hello,
I think I found a solution to this on the new app. Still couldn't find an option on the web app though...
I just did mine but I have thousands of emails so I think it could take a few days before I can actually download it and confirm.
Hope this helps!
These instructions only work if you are using the Outlook Application on your computer. You see Home/View/Help if you're using a browser to check your email, and as far as I can tell the OWA or "Outlook Web App" has no options for downloading all the email. All you can do from OWA is forward each email to a new address or Select a batch of emails from the folder and drag them as attachments into a new email and send as attachments. This method may not work well depending on if you want to easily read and search for content at a later date. I'm also not sure how well this saves attachments within attachments so those emails with files that your attaching may be lost.
Best option I have seen online is setting up a personal account, Gmail or other, in the Outlook App on the computer. Download a O365 trial or pay for the download if all else fails. Now that you have your Outlook email and Personal email setup, select all emails you want from folder and drag to your personal email Inbox. Create new folders for each you need to transfer on your personal account and repeat. Depending on how many emails and attachments this process could take some time.
Login to your personal email to verify everything is working and uninstall the O365 Trial or continue to use if you purchased for the year.
Best of luck!
