Android email: "unable to validate account"

A few days ago, my default Android email app booted all of my email profiles, causing me to log back into all of them.

While Gmail and Yahoo had no trouble, Hotmail won't allow me to log back in. It goes through the 2-factor authentication, then "unable to validate account" pops up on the screen.

I've tried changing the port and server info in manual setup, but that hasn't helped. I've tried as many tricks as I could find on Google, but nothing's worked, including signing in through Exchange or "other," but when it sees it's a Hotmail account in the email field, it automatically pulls up the Outlook login.

Android 10, Samsung Galaxy S9.

I know I can use the Outlook app, but I'd rather a single email app on my phone for all my email accounts.

Outlook | Outlook for mobile | Outlook for Android | For business

It sure would have been nice if instead of saying it might log us out when we cleared the data, that you informed us that when we did that, ALL of our email folders, accounts, ect would be deleted. Now, I am in worse shape than before cause emails for things like my car insurance, bill receipts, business sales orders, ect are ALL gone permanently. And it STILL didn't fix the issue cause it won't let me add the hotmail account back in.

    Hello Bopeuph,

I'm Ibhadighi and I'd happily help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.

If you're experiencing "unable to validate account" errors when trying to log into your Hotmail account via the default Android email app, here are some steps to try and resolve the issue:

    1. Go to your phone settings, find the email app under "Apps," and clear the cache and data. This may log you out of all accounts, so be prepared to log into them again.
    2. Ensure that your password is correct and that two-factor authentication is working properly. You may need to use an app password if you have two-factor authentication enabled.
    3. Remove the Hotmail account from the app and add it again, ensuring all the details are correct.
    4. Check for updates for your email app and install any available ones.
    5. Correct Server Settings: For manual setup, use the following settings for Hotmail (Outlook):
      • **IMAP server**: imap-mail.outlook.com
      • **Security type**: SSL/TLS
      • **Port**: 993
      • **SMTP server**: smtp-mail.outlook.com
      • **Security type**: STARTTLS
      • **Port**: 587
    6. Ensure the email app has all the necessary permissions enabled.
    7. If the email app is a third-party app, try uninstalling and reinstalling it.
    8. As a last resort, if none of the above steps work, you might have to consider using the Outlook app just for your Hotmail account or finding another third-party email app that can integrate all your accounts effectively.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards, Ibhadighi

    Settings>Apps

Under "Email," You should have an "uninstall" or "disable" option. Since it's a default app, you can't really uninstall it on an Android phone.

At the very least, if you remember your password, you're not screwed. Simply login from the browser or download another email app. This isn't the only way you can access your email. but it might be the most convenient. Nothing's lost; it's still saved on your email's server.

How did you uninstall the updates? I can't find a place to do that. And after deleting the data like the person above said, I am in even worse shape cause all my email folders & their emails are gone. I am sooo screwed at this point.

    Hi Ibhadighi,

Thanks. What it took was uninstalling the latest update to the email app and using the default version. Everything else up to server settings (which was the first thing I tried four days ago) did not work.

But for now, it's working! Thanks!
