Receiving a massive amount of spam in my inbox

Hi

Have used free outlook.com com for many years. Suddenly during the summer I started to receive tons of spam in my inbox. I found no good settings for spam filter etc, and I guessed that this probably was a premium feature. So I upgraded and to a paying subscription for Microsoft 365. Hopefully this would fix my problem. And it did.. and I was thrilled ... for 2 weeks. Now it's even worse..

So now, I am paying the amount for a Microsoft 365 subscription, to get the spam/security features, but it doesn't work. I receive about 50-60 crapmails a day. It's so bad that I starting to believe I need to change my email, and leave my beloved outlook.com that I have been used for many many years .. And of course there is no need for the 365 subscription. I get all the stuff from work anyway.

I have read many other places that other users and paying customers struggle with the same. Why don't Microsoft take action??

In the same boat ... why did I bother paying the subscription - marking emails as spam, creating rules .... they still keep coming. The volume of these getting into my Focussed folder is a joke.

It'd be a full time job creating rules to keep them out - at least give us the option to block emails that come with a load of stupid icons.

It's clear from the response to the OP that the customer is the one who needs to fix this - seems evident that Microsoft aren't able, and the only real fix is to move to GMail.

A quick fix for your problem is to change to gmail. I have struggled for years with this problem, doesnt matter how often I created filters or changed settings. It seems that Microsoft doesnt care. Even in my work mail, which is outlook, the problem exists. After moving to gmail, no problem at all. The spams just disappeared.

My guess is that they feel they don't need to dedicate time, energy & funds to filtering out spam ... it's not that hard to set limits of, say, 1,000 reports of spam emails to have an account have it's messages 'quarantined' in recipients spam folders, pending a *please explain* automatic message to the company and then if no or an unsatisfactory response is received, just blocking the company completely, and then to continue to block companies over and over and over until spam email ceases to be a thing

That is, Microsoft is bloated and lazy and very, very complacent

@Rick, I second your motion re Gmail. I'm actively in the process of asking contacts to use my Gmail account instead of Outlook. When I"m all done in a couple of months, I'll just shut Outlook down.

Agree, gmail account NEVER gets spam and my msn account is off the charts. Same emails but everyday they come from a different email address. No good way to create a rule since you can only block the actual email it comes from and not the one that appears as the "from" email. An absolute joke of an email program. Gonna be a PITA but time to start migrating everything away from the address I have used for 25 years now. UGH.

    Hello Sigurd,

My name is Jackson and thank you for your question.

So sorry for the problem you are experiencing with unwanted emails, I am also a user and understand how frustrating this is.

Several users have experienced increase in spam messages getting through the outlook filter and this has been reported to the Microsoft team, however we can take few steps on our path to mitigate the issue.

If you continue to receive spam messages, you can reduce spam messages by blocking senders. In situations when blocking senders does not work creating rules that filter certain keywords and moving emails flagged to junk would help.

We also have the option to change the level of protection in the spam filter to make it more aggressive, You can tell Outlook to delete all suspected junk messages instead of moving them to the Junk E-mail folder; https://support.microsoft.com/office/e89c12d8-9d61-4320-8c57-d982c8d52f6b

Other options to help keep spam or unwanted email out of your inbox

    1. Blocks all unknown senders
    2. Create a rule to delete unwanted emails.
    3. Hide your email address
    4. Ignore spam or instant messages
    5. Improve PC security
    6. Unsubscribe from newsletters and campaigns
    7. Share your emails with only people you know

    See details on how to perform the above steps below;

    Warm greetings.
