Blocking an Email Address from reaching Your Outlook Account

If you block someone so that you don't get their emails in your outlook account, are they informed that they're being blocked each time they attempt to email you? That is, do they know when a message is not getting through to you, and if yes, how?

Also, if you block ******@outlook.com, will the username BILLYJOE be blocked from all domains, such as ******@yahoo.com, ******@hotmail.com, @gmail.com, etc, or will only the address listed <B@outlook.com> be blocked?

    Hello Gary S,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community. My name is Marisol and I am happy to assist.

I can see your interest in understanding whether a sender will be notified if they are blocked from your Outlook account.

The answer is no, please note that when you block a sender's email address, they will not receive any notification indicating that they've been blocked. It's a client-side action, so to them, it will appear as though their emails are being sent and delivered to you normally, even though you won't receive them. Blocking a sender is a private action and does not trigger any alerts or notifications to the sender. Also, you will not receive any notifications if blocked senders sent any messages.

You may refer to check this link to learn more information: https://support.microsoft.com/office/a3ece97b-82f8-4a5e-9ac3-e92fa6427ae4.

I trust the above information has addressed your concern. If you have any more questions, I'm here to help.

    Best regards, Marisol D.

    Hello again Gary S,

Thank you for responding back. If you saved BILLYJOE in your Block sender, every email address that comes with the word BILLYJOE will be blocked.

You can try testing this to yoursel by asking someone you know in your family who have other email addresses, you can try blocking their addresses and ask them to send you an email to confirm if their email messages will arrive in your inbox.

If email from a blocked sender still appears in your Inbox, the sender might be:

    • Changing their email address. Create an Inbox rule to pick up common words in your Inbox email and move them to the Deleted Items folder. Learn how to use Inbox rules in Outlook, please refer to this link: https://support.microsoft.com/office/4b094371-a5d7-49bd-8b1b-4e4896a7cc5d
    • Hiding the real email address. View internet message headers to check if the email address shown is different from the sender's real address and add it to your blocked senders list.

Please refer to this link to View internet message headers: https://support.microsoft.com/office/cd039382-dc6e-4264-ac74-c048563d212c#tab=web

Thank you. If you have any more questions, please let me know.

    Best regards, Marisol D.
