Getting this error message:

Authentication failed. Please check your username/password.
Server returned error: "Unspecified Error (SENT_SECOND_EHLO): Smtp server does not advertise AUTH capability, code: 504"

This happens after I turn on passwordless account and then turn off.

    Dear starrxu

I'm sorry for the slightly late reply.

I've run various tests and am currently unable to use GMAIL's built-in email sending and receiving on my behalf.

My side is consistent with your reported error.

I tested various states of the account, such as turning on two-step verification, using a separate password, or simply using a password.

None of them can pass the authentication and I believe this is Gmail temporarily turning off the ability to send and receive emails on behalf of the account.

If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, it is even more recommended that you use Classic Outlook directly to configure and manage all your mailboxes.

We're sorry to see that you've marked it as unhelpful, but we're eager to resolve your issue. You can tell us the details of your needs and we may have other ways to help you realize them.

In particular, the issue you have raised is a potentially deprecated feature in Gmail.

    Best Wish

    Dear starrxu

The traditional GMAIL settings for configuring external accounts do not apply to the passwordless login feature.

Therefore it is first recommended that you cancel the passwordless login, set your Microsoft account password, and use port 587 for the SMTP server encryption port TLS.

We hope you will test it again and look forward to your reply

    Hi, my replies:

    • What email server are you trying to add? Is it POP3, IMAP or Exchange?

I believed is IMAP via Gmail "Add another email address".

    • What is the domain of the account you are using? For example: @live.com,@hotmail.com,@outlook.com,@******@gmail.com

    st*****@hotmail.com

    • According to your description “This happens after I open the no password account and then close it”, can I understand that you enable the no password feature and then disable the no password feature? Please feel free to point out my misunderstanding, thank you for your patience and understanding!

Yes. All along was working until I turn on passwordless feature in hotmail security. I have turned this feature off already but still unable to add back this account in my Gmail.

    • Have you set up SMTP client submission? If yes, please share with us a detailed screenshot and if convenient, please share with us how you set up the SMTP client to send emails using Office 365, thank you for your cooperation.

    Hello starrxu ,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community!

I understand that you have encountered a 504 error while connecting to hotmail-com.olc.protection.outlook.com, and I understand your confusion and frustration with this issue.

In order to get a good understanding of your problem, I need to confirm some details of the issue with you:

    • What email server are you trying to add? Is it POP3, IMAP or Exchange?
    • What is the domain of the account you are using? For example: @live.com,@hotmail.com,@outlook.com,@******@gmail.com
    • According to your description “This happens after I open the no password account and then close it”, can I understand that you enable the no password feature and then disable the no password feature? Please feel free to point out my misunderstanding, thank you for your patience and understanding!
    • Have you set up SMTP client submission? If yes, please share with us a detailed screenshot and if convenient, please share with us how you set up the SMTP client to send emails using Office 365, thank you for your cooperation.

Also, if you are experiencing this issue while using Authenticator, it is recommended to click on Feedback directly from Authenticator and a Authenticator support expert will see your feedback and provide support.

If you have forgotten your password, depending on the error message, you may need to retrieve your account password first, or if you are using the correct account password, it is recommended that you refer to the documentation to reset your account password:

Change your Microsoft account password - Microsoft Support

Reset a forgotten Microsoft account password - Microsoft Support

We hope the above can point you in the right direction and wish you all the best!
