How can I sign into Microsoft Outlook with my Gmail account?

Hi, I have previously had my google accounts signed into the microsoft 365, outlook app on windows 11, however, after recently setting up a new laptop I am now getting an error when trying to connect . I click sign in, then insert my email in the outlook connect dialogue box, then I get taken to the google sign in dialogue box and insert my email again but when I hit next I get a message saying that I couldn't sign in because the browser or app may not be secure. After a quick google it appears there use to be an option in google security settings for enabling unsecure apps but they have tightened up their security. It also says that outlook should be fine as it uses the OAuth system for logging in. I'm confused... any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That is a bug - it has nothing to do with the less secure apps feature (which is disabled for Gmail accounts.) When I had the error on a new computer, it worked when I tried later.

One possible solution is in this article - https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/outlook-errorgoogle-sign/

You may or may not need to set Edge as the default browser (if you are using another browser as default.)

Open Edge's Settings and search for Internet Explorer (or open this link: edge://settings/defaultBrowser)

Change one of the following settings (or both, if desired).

Let Internet Explorer open sites in Microsoft Edge to Always (Recommended)

Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode to Allow

    Hi Ruth,

Thanks for your response and clarification. Unfortunately IMAP is already enabled so I do not think this is my issue.

When I enter my gmail address I receive the following:

    Kind regards,

    Tom

    Hello Tom,

Thank you for contacting the Microsoft community. To connect your Gmail account to Microsoft Outlook using IMAP settings, follow these steps:

Enable IMAP in Gmail: Log in to your Gmail account. Click the gear icon (Settings) in the top-right corner. Select See all settings. Go to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. Under the IMAP access section, choose Enable IMAP. Click Save Changes. Add Gmail Account to Outlook (Desktop App): Open Outlook. If it’s your first time, click on the File tab and then Add Account. Enter your Gmail address and click Connect. Provide your Gmail password and allow access. Your Gmail IMAP account will be successfully added to Outlook. Verify and Sync: Make sure Outlook is populating with your Gmail emails.
