Why is Immersive Reader automatically starting whenever I open Outlook classic?

Hello,

Every time I start Outlook classic for my Windows 11 desktop, the Immersive Reader starts as well. I have to click on the Immersive Reader button each time to turn it off. The next time I start Outlook, the Immersive Reader is active again. I don’t recall doing anything to cause Immersive Reader to start by default. Several troubleshooting suggestions told me to go into Options and find the relevant Immersive Reader settings to disable it. The problem with that is that these settings don’t exist in my Options panel. Can you give me a way to fix this once and for all so that Immersive Reader is only on when I actively turn it on, not by default? Is it as simple as uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook? Thank you for your assistance.

Dave

When you turn the reader off, do you do it when you are composing mail then send it? Try turning it off then cancel the send. (This works for for other settings - like zoom levels.)

Did you try turning it off then immediately restarting outlook?

Do you have "Store my Outlook settings in the cloud (requires restarting Outlook)" as at option at the top of File > Options > General ? If yes, it should be unchecked- then restart outlook. Try it for a few days then try checking it again.

I also noticed two entries for Microsoft 365 in my Installed Apps: Microsoft 365-en, no size listed; and Microsoft 365 (Office), 99.1MB. Why do I have two; and would this influence this behavior in Outlook?

Nether app would affect it (nor new Outlook). The 99MB file is the Office "dashboard" app. The one with the language code (en in your case) is the office desktop software.

The Microsoft 365 in this screenshot is the dashboard app - the office apps in the screenshot are from the Microsoft 365-en file.

Thank you! I never noticed the setting about storing my settings in the cloud. I looked once you suggested it and discovered that it was indeed checked. I unchecked it and restarted Outlook. I'll give it a go for a few days and hope that resolved things. I appreciate your insights.

I renamed the file as you suggested and restarted my laptop. There was no change. Immersive Reader is still on every time that I open Classic Outlook. I uninstalled New Outlook thinking that may have some impact; but there was no change after doing so. I also noticed two entries for Microsoft 365 in my Installed Apps: Microsoft 365-en, no size listed; and Microsoft 365 (Office), 99.1MB. Why do I have two; and would this influence this behavior in Outlook?

This behavior has only begun in the last week. Prior to that I had to manually turn Immersive Reader on if I wanted to use it. It seems that something has gone wrong in that Immersive Reader is now starting every time Outlook opens. I am unable to diagnose what the problem is and, thus, to fix. I would appreciate your help. Thanks much.

What settings did it tell you to check in Options?

I would try closing Outlook then renaming the NormalEmail file at C:\Users%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates - see if that fixes it.
