Is POP and PST files no longer supported after the SEP 16th 2024 changes

Following the September 16th changes that Microsoft made to force Modern Authentication, send/receive email in Windows (Classic) Outlook 365 no longer works. Having spoken to a number of MS support agents their answer is to add a new profile to create as an Exchange connection and OST file. This is very strange, as Microsoft provide instructions to configure 3rd party email software (e.g. Thunderbird) but not for Microsoft's own product.

Is it correct that Classic Outlook for Windows no longer supports POP and PST files?

Is there any method to be able to continue using POP and PST file in Classic Outlook.

    Dear RichardTepper1,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

I understand your confusion regarding Microsoft's adoption of modern authentication for logging into Microsoft email accounts starting from September 16th. Please allow me to clarify the situation for you.

In fact, if you are using a Microsoft domain email account (such as outlook/Hotmail/live/msn), the answer is “yes.” The classic Outlook no longer supports configuring it using POP/IMAP protocols. The instructions for configuring a Microsoft domain email account in Outlook are mentioned in this article: Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps - Microsoft Support

However, if you are using a third-party email account (like Gmail/Yahoo/etc.), you can still configure it using IMAP/POP protocols. Microsoft's modern authentication primarily targets adjustments for Microsoft domain email accounts.

I hope my explanation has been helpful to you. Feel free to post back if you need further assistance.  I wish you all the best.

    Best Regards,

    Hello

All users of Microsoft emails had access access to their emails with Office Outlook in windows, with pop3 or IMAP settings.

But The IMAP method of settings is not useful because it doesn't cover all the features of all the faculties of pop3 settings.

So many of my students and I, and certainly many others, since 20th of September 2024 have problems receiving their emails from Office Outlook in Windows.

Someone at Microsoft decided these changes so all Microsoft users must delete their account from Office Outlook in Windows and automatically create it again automatically with exchange and IMAP settings in a separate outlook hidden folder.

    This is not usefull!

After 25 years of experience, I consider this action by Microsoft to be totally unacceptable and will prevent users of Microsoft emails from using this email and will move (promote) to a competitor (GOOGLE GMAIL or YAHOO MAIL).

Google mails and yahoo mails have no problem connecting with pop3 in Outlook because they use the 2-step verification feature and a special password for Microsoft Outlook.

Microsoft emails (hotmail.com & outlook.com etc.) do NOT have the 2-step verification function and special code.

Please make Microsoft emails to have more secure ways to connect such as 2-step verification function and special code with pop3 setting in Microsoft Office Outlook in Windows.

    Thank you

    Hello Ron6576,

Thanks for the info. I presumed it would do a two-way sync. So, effectively, desktop Outlook 365 and new Outlook for Windows are as good as the same, in that they both sync with Exchange.

What really annoys me with this is that having received the initial email from Microsoft about the September 16th changes, I contacted Microsoft support who assured me that desktop Outlook 365 for Windows would not be affected by the changes, the authentication changes only applied to 3rd-party software.

Having recently paid a 365 subscription to get all my Office apps and Outlook up to date and supported, I suddenly find I can no longer use the product as I have been for the last 20+ years.

I also think the support agent I spoke was equally as confused as I was was by the email regarding the upcoming Sept 16th changes (who wouldn't be when the company you work for gives all its email products the same name).

    RANT OVER...

    >> is the syncing two-way? For instance if I delete an email using either desktop Outlook or OWA, is it deleted from the other?

It is. Assuming there is an internet connection, when you delete an item from desktop Outlook, it will be removed from the mailbox (on the server side). Likewise, when you connect through OWA and delete and item from your mailbox, it will sync down to the desktop Outlook when the app connects to the internet.

You can also use desktop Outlook to send files without internet connection. The email goes nowhere but will be sent when there's internet connection.

    >> Similarly does a two-way sync occur when moving emails into folders?

Yes. Delete, move and other activities such as creating new emails, folders, calendar items will sync up to the server when there's connection. You can actually test it yourself by opening Outlook desktop and accessing OWA simultaneously or accessing your mailbox from your smartphone. Delete an item from either one (desktop, OWA or phone) and watch the item gone from the other within a few seconds.

    Hi Ulrica W

Thank you for confirming that POP/PST is no longer supported by Outlook desktop.

Could you please answer a couple of questiond I have regarding syncing. After I have created a Exchange Outlook profile using and my emails have been synced into the new OST file, is the syncing two-way? For instance if I delete an email using either desktop Outlook or OWA, is it deleted from the other? Similarly does a two-way sync occur when moving emails into folders?
